Chapter 170

The next thing I knew, Kane had me pressed against the nearest wall with his hands planted on either side of my face. “I think you’re completely downplaying the fact that you’ve created the very first cure against Wolfsbane,” he acknowledged. “Can’t you see how utterly groundbreaking this is?”

He took my jaw in his hands and pulled me in for a deep kiss. A wave of laughter bubbled between us.

“Alright, I may see your point,” I teased.

The following days had taken on their own unique routine. The mornings were spent in Michael’s room, where I would systematically check his vitals and other reflexes while administering another small dose of the serum.

It was imperative that his system kept flushing itself of any remaining poison left over.

Once we noticed that the serum no longer had any physical effect on him, it was noted that Michael no longer required it. This also meant that Kane and I were finally free to question him.

That afternoon, while a majority of the medical staff was on their lunch break, Kane and I headed to the restricted area where a rather anxious Michael was waiting. As usual, I checked over his vitals and his

basic reflexes.

“Well, everything seems to be back to normal based on the screens,” I commented. “But why don’t you tell me how you’re really feeling?”

Michael looked dejected and thoroughly wrung out. “Drained and weak.”

I nodded. “The good news is that you no longer need any more treatments. It appears that all of the Wolfsbane has finally left your system.”

Michael’s eyes grew wide in fearful shock. “W-Wolfsbane?” I shared a look with Kane. “Is that what happened?”

“You’re saying that you don’t remember anything?” Kane questioned.

Michael shook his head. “After the injection… Nothing. Look, I’m telling you. None of us even knew that these injections were laced with Wolfsbane. If we had, then none of us would have agreed to take them.”

Kane clenched his jaw in growing frustration. “Why the fuck are the rogues banding together in the first place?”

“What are you gaining out of all of this chaos?” I asked.

Michael hung his head in shame. “Over the last year or so, I’ve come across so many other rogues like myself. We’d all been cheated out and burned by our previous alphas. It came to a group consensus that we all resented the hierarchy when it came to pack dynamics,” he explained.

He scratched the back of his neck. “Alright, I’ll admit that some of us got a kick out of stirring up trouble, but we promised never to let things get too out of hand-”

“Your little band of misfits set off major explosives at a public event! Children and women were around, you’re lucky that no one died!”

He held up his hands in defense. “Believe me, that was the final straw for a lot of us. We never meant for things to become that horribly escalated,” Michael said.

“Why would you agree to receive this mystery injection in the first place?” I questioned.

“We were told that it was meant to act as a sedative,” he answered. “You see, a lot of us deal with terrible anger and rage issues.”

“Who told you that’s what it was?” I pushed.

But again, Michael shook his head. “None of us ever met the physician who created it.”

“So, you have no idea who’s behind this,” Kane concluded.

“Unfortunately, no.”

Kane let out a deep, frustrated growl from his chest. “Can you, at the very least, tell us how many rogues there actually are?”

“Last time I was made aware, somewhere around four hundred.”

My eyes grew wide while I stifled back the tremulous gasp that threatened to escape.

“F-Four hundred?! Holy shit. Kane…That’s almost an army.”
