Chapter 169
Evelyn’s POV
Both Kane and I scrambled to throw on proper clothes and make our way back to the medical ward. I
couldn’t believe it.
At first, I thought I’d misheard Henri when he spoke. But there was no denying the shock, nor the look of sheer astoundment. My heart thrummed frantically inside my rib cage.
“How are his vitals?” I asked Henri, breathlessly.
“I’m not entirely sure,” he said. “I was just informed of his status by one of the guards who was
stationed outside of his door.”
I was so eager to find out what shape this rogue was in that I nearly tripped over my feet at least twice. Kane even made it a point to hold me by my upper arm to ensure that I wouldn’t end up clipping one of the corners in the hallway.
We got to the restricted side of the ward and, indeed, the rogue was awake. Awake and very, very confused.
He caught a quick glimpse of me through the small glass window in the door. “Hello?” he called out.
I reached for the door handle, but Kane quickly stopped me. “Hold on, let me go in first.”
While I admired his protectiveness, I was fairly certain that it wasn’t going to be necessary. Based on what I was able to determine from that quick glimpse, this patient was far too disoriented to cause any
real trouble.
Nevertheless, I stepped into the room after Kane and went over to the man’s monitor to check his vitals.
“Can someone please tell me what the hell is going on?” he asked. I hadn’t missed the tone of panic in his voice. Rightfully so, I could imagine.
“Perhaps we should start with some sort of proper introductions?” I suggested calmly.
The guy glanced between Kane and me and sank back into the cot. “My name is Michael,” he said timidly.
“Hello, Michael. I’m Evelyn, and this is Kane.
Kane remained stoic and silent. His eyes never shifted from Michael’s figure while I worked at the monitor. From what I could see, his brain activity had returned to its normal level. His heart rate though, was still struggling to increase.
There again, it made sense. This guy had been basically surviving in an ongoing comatose state.
I called for one of the soldiers to bring me a fresh IV drip to help increase his fluid intake.
“What am I doing here?” he tried to ask as his words began to slur.

My heart dropped into my stomach as the two of us watched his complexion turn a white-ish green. I swiftly picked up one of the empty buckets on the floor and placed it under his chin. All of the contents that were swirling around in Michael’s stomach had been agonizingly expelled.
I couldn’t help but cringe in disgust.
By the time Michael had stopped, the poor guy looked moments away from passing out. I swiftly hooked up his new IV drip and let him slip back down into his cot.
Grabbing Kane’s hand, I dragged us both out of the room. “Come on, he won’t be much help tonight given
his current state.”
As we left, I made it a point to tell the guards stationed outside of Michael’s room to keep a close observation on him. “No one is to know that the rogue is awake, nor that the serum worked,” I said.
My exhaustion was finally settling in as Kane and I headed back to our room. I could feel his gaze on me.
“Why keep it all a secret?” he asked lightly.
I gently shook my head. “It’s too early to assume anything,” I said. “While I’m glad he’s awake, we still need to track his body’s reaction to the serum. You saw what happened, the man threw up his guts in
there.”
