Chapter 168
He was right. As much as I wanted to stay and watch over this one rogue, I knew that it wouldn’t be the best way to utilize my time.
“Okay,” I said. “Should anything happen while I’m gone, please inform me as soon as possible.”
Henri bowed his head, and I began making my way toward the dining hall. Right as I walked in, I spotted
Diana and the others.
“Hey!” Diana greeted me with a smile. “Hows your work coming in the lab?”
“I, uh, actually finished the serum this morning,” I said. “I’ve just come from the medical ward, having administered it to one of the rogues.”
Half the table fell completely silent. Nearly everyone stared at me with stunned expressions.
“Oh, my Gods, Evelyn… That’s amazing!!” she exclaimed. The rest of your medical team broke out into shared cheers, causing my face to flush.
“Please, as much as I appreciate the support, we don’t know if the serum is going to have any proper effect,” I said.
Diana held up her hand in protest. “Regardless. What you’ve managed to achieve in such a short period of time is nothing short of immaculate.”
I was suddenly overcome with an overwhelming feeling of acceptance that I never knew I would feel. A sensation that reminded me of life before my mother had passed. Appreciated. Community. Loved.
“I appreciate that, Diana.”
The duration of lunch carried on with less exciting conversations. And in truth, I was looking forward to returning to my normal work in the medical ward.
Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted Alexander moving outside in the hallways. I instantly jumped out of my seat and quickly waved goodbye to my team members.
“Alexander!” I called after him.
He stopped to glance over his shoulder. He gave me a soft smile and stopped, letting me catch up to
him.
“Hey, Evie.”
“Where the hell have you been?” I gasped, trying to catch my breath.
Alexander merely shrugged. “Just…dealing with some stuff from my father,” he said passively.
My brows drew together. “I see.” His strange behavior left me feeling puzzled. “Well, I feel like I should tell you about what’s been going on here, at least.”

“By all means.”

We continued on with our walk. I went on to tell him that we discovered that the rogues had been injected with Wolfsbane, along with my work I’d been carrying on in the lab that Kane had specially designed for me.
Alexander’s expression changed half a dozen times through the course of your conversation, making it practically impossible for me to pinpoint exactly how he was feeling. By the time I finished telling him everything, Alexander looked wary, almost like he was trying to school his emotions.
That night, I was lying next to Kane in bed. My head was swarming with so many thoughts, I would be truly shocked if I managed to get an hour’s worth of sleep.
Kane shut the book he’d been reading and placed it over on the nightstand before turning to face me. “I can feel the various wheels in your head turning,” he said. “Would you please try to relax a little?”
I pulled a face while giving me the side-eye. “Not sure that’s going to be possible. Not tonight.”
Too much had happened. Between administering the first trial of the serum and how strangely Alexander had behaved earlier, I wasn’t sure what to do or what to think.
For a moment, I considered telling Kane about my encounter with Alexander, however, I decided swiftly against it.
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!
I let out a frightened gasp, not expecting the thunderous sound that rapt at the door. Kane traced to the door and nearly tore it off its hinges.
It was Henri, looking disheveled.
“Luna Evelyn.” He struggled to catch his breath. “…The rogue is awake.”
