Chapter 167
Evelyn’s POV
“It’s not ready,” I said tensely.
“Evelyn.”
“It’s not ready,” I repeated mindlessly.
“Evelyn.”
Another week had passed since Kane had demanded I shift my workload. I was willing to admit that I felt tremendously better, and was able to gear a majority of my focus solely to the real task at hand.
The first trial of creating the serum that would help draw out the poison in the feral rogues was complete. However, even as I finished bottling up my work, I couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sensation of worry.
What if it didn’t work? What if it made things significantly worse? What if it ended up causing more damage than good?
By the time Kane came down to the lab to collect me and the trial serum, I thought I was at the very edge of having a panic attack. He rushed over to me while I had my hands braced out on the counter in front of me and my head tilted downward between my arms.
“What if it doesn’t work?”
“Evelyn!”
I snapped my head up to meet his concerned look. “I can’t believe how much you’re doubting yourself right now after all the work you’ve been putting into this,” he said.
Kane took my slumping shoulders in his hands and got me to stand up straight.
“I just…Oh Gods, Kane. What if it doesn’t work?” I asked weakly. “You know I’m not exactly a trained chemist by any means. I merely took a few different agents and carefully paired them together.”
“First off, don’t ever underplay your work,” he said firmly. “Secondly, even though you may not be a fully trained chemist, all that matters is the ultimate result of your serum.”
“But what if it doesn’t work?!”
“What if it does!” he shouted back with equal fervor.
I opened my mouth to speak, but found myself at a loss for words. “I… It’s bad enough that I’m basically treating these rogues as lab rats when we really have no idea what this serum will do.”
He gently rubbed circles into my tense shoulders. “I know this may not be what you want to hear, but in a manner of speaking, these rogues have already been treated as someone else’s lab rats,” he said. “When they were injected with that Wolfsbane variation, that so-called chemist may not have known what would

have happened either.”
I took in a deep breath and nodded. “You’re right.”
“The sole difference between you and whoever the hell started all of this is that you’re trying to rectify the problem.”
I closed my eyes and let my breathing even out before nodding my head. “Alright, let’s do this?”
Kane and I travelled back to the medical ward, where we were met by Henir and a few other group members. I tried my best to keep my nerves in check as I held up the healing serum for them to see.
Kane had ordered the guards to move one of the unconscious feral rogues to another room, mainly for safety precautions.
With a fine-tipped syringe, I drew out the serum from its glass jar and carefully knocked out any remaining air bubbles. With a steady hand, I inserted the end into the same spot that they had previously been injected.
“How long do you think it’s going to take for any effect to kick in?” Henri asked.
I gently shook my head. “Honestly, your guess is as good as mine,” I told him. “It could be anywhere from an hour to an hour to the entire day, mainly because we have no idea how much Wolfsbane they were injected with.”
Kane rested his hand on my shoulder, gently pulling me back. “You’ve done all that you can for the moment,” he said. “Why don’t you go and join Diana and the others in the dining hall for lunch?”
