Yes, I was deeply touched by his words of affirmation. It was great to hear that my presence had finally become accepted. However, the importance of this possible cure was absolutely vital.

We both knew that these feral rogues possessed information-information that could turn this entire war on its head. It would give Kane and his soldiers the upper hand.

Kane must have sensed that I wasn’t going to budge on the matter. His tone grew stern. “If you won’t adjust your schedule to give yourself the proper breaks you need, then I’m going to tell Diana to block you from the medical ward until your work in the lab is completed.”

I snapped my head to glare back at him. “You can’t-”

“Oh, yes, I can,” he countered. “You may think that the cure is the only important thing right now, however, you are my top priority. You.”

A blush bloomed across my face. “I understand.”

“Good,” he said with a simple smile. He got up from the bed and gestured for me to follow him. “Come.”

I pulled back the covers and leisurely followed him into the bathroom, where I saw a luxurious bubble bath had been drawn. I glanced at Kane, who merely smiled.

“I’m glad you got some much-needed rest. Now, I want you to properly unwind for a little while,” he said.

A long, hot soak sounded wonderful. I stepped forward and began removing my clothes. Kane gently cleared his throat and began making his way to the door. “I’ll leave you to it then.”

“Stay,” I called out, my voice laced with desperation.

These last few days, I’d been missing him. Between the ongoing hours at work and my unbeatable exhaustion, I wasn’t able to spend any real time with him.

I let my clothes fall to the floor, knowing that his eyes were locked solely on me. Granted, I wasn’t trying to seduce him, yet his gaze turned heated nonetheless. I stepped into the tub and eased down beneath the millions of lavender-scented bubbles.

Without having to be told again, Kane closed the distance between us and knelt down beside the bathtub. I rested my chin on the ledge and simply let my eyes wander over him.

“I know I’m supposed to be relaxing right now and not thinking about work,” I started. “However, I just want to give an update on how the treatment is coming along.”

Kane playfully rolled his eyes and let out a huff. “Fine. How’s the work in the lab coming along?”

“Really well, I think. I mean, despite my stubborn persistence, I believe that I’m on the verge of successfully creating the first potential sample of our cure. I just need to make sure that the charcoal is ground up fine enough for me to mix in with the rest of the serum,” I explained.

“That’s incredible,” he said with awe.

The two of us slipped into a soft conversation about how long it would take for us to administer the first round of treatment. As time passed, we slipped into a calming silence that prompted me to speak out.

“Penny for your thoughts?” I inquired with a smile.

A humored grin took hold of his mouth. “I was thinking about how stunning you look right now, surrounded by nothing but bubbles.”

“Oh?”

He nodded. “What about you?”

“I’m thinking about how good it felt when you were inside of me,” I said, feeling confident.

Arousal flashed across his eyes. “Oh, is that right?” he asked teasingly. I bent his head down to take my lips in a sweeping kiss. “I think you’ve spent long enough in there, don’t you?”
