Chapter 165
Evelyn’s POV
Was. Exhausted.
But I refused to stop, especially since I felt that I was close to creating the first real testable sample for
the cure.
While I waited for my charcoal samples to be properly ground up by our compact crusher, I let my hands rest on the counter in front of me.
My eyes were so heavy, I barely felt as though I’d gotten any real sleep. In fact, I’d been feeling that way for the last several days.
Ever since the lab was completed with all the materials I needed were at my disposal, I wasted no time jumping into my new work. I know I should have at least paced myself, but I personally believed that we had limited time to get this done.
War was on the horizon. I could feel it in my bones. It felt like any day now, the Alpha King would sign over his approval, and Kane would be leading his soldiers into a blood-filled battle.
Without this potential cure, we would lose the advantage of winning.
Every minute I spent in that lab mattered.
Yet, all the while, I couldn’t allow myself to fall behind in my other responsibilities. I made sure to show up for every single one of my shifts in the medical ward. I waved off every one of Diana and Josie’s comments about how tired I looked.
I was so close…So close…
Maybe I could just rest my eyes for a moment, I thought. Just a moment.
My eyes had become too heavy to keep open, even if I tried. The moment they closed, I felt my knees begin to buckle.
Right as I thought I was bound to hit the floor, I felt a strong set of arms wrap around me
“Evelyn.”
“Kane?” I mumbled.
His deep, smooth voice filled my head. “It’s alright,” he hushed. “I’ve got you”
“N-No, can’t leave,” I tried to tell him.
I could hardly move my body. Part of me was thankful that he ignored my refusal to stay at the lab, knowing that I wasn’t going to be of much use.
“You’re going to take a much-needed break,” he said firmly. “Whether you like it or not.”

I had no idea where he was taking me, nor did I really care. All I knew was that I was able to safely rest in his arms and not have to move a single muscle.
Kane pressed a light kiss to the top of my head. “It’s time for you to get some proper rest
I didn’t have the energy to argue. Within minutes, I had fallen completely unconscious
I had no idea what time it was when I opened my eyes. I blinked back the blurriness to find Kane sitting on the corner of the bed, glancing down at me with a knowing look.
I pinched my brows together and groaned. “You don’t need to say it, I already know,” I grumbled.
He raised a questionable brow and smirked. “Humor me then,” he prompted.
I let out a sigh. “I’ve been horribly overworking myself these last several days,” I admitted.
“Indeed you have,” he agreed sternly. “Evelyn, when it became known that there could be a potential cure for the feral rogues, no one expected you to be the one to take on everything.”
I sank back into my pillows, feeling chastised. “I know.”
“I also know that you still think that you need to prove yourself to this pack, but you’ll be glad to know that word has gotten around about your recent endeavors. There isn’t a single person here who isn’t astounded by your dedication and accomplishments.”
I tore my eyes away. “It won’t mean anything if it doesn’t work,” I muttered.
Kane shut his eyes and released a frustrated breath. “So, in the meantime, is it okay for you to run yourself into the ground?” he asked accusingly. “Whether you want to acknowledge this or not, your health and well-being are worth more than any cure that needs to be given to those goddamn creatures
