Chapter 174

Evelyn’s POV

As I expected, word had traveled fast about the lab getting destroyed. This, unfortunately, placed a good portion of the pack under heavy suspicion amongst themselves.

“Who the hell would go out of their way to destroy the lab?”

“Especially when Luna Evelyn has been working so hard to restore those feral rogues from their

comatose state.”

“Yeah, I even heard that she planned to develop a bunch of new healing salvants for when the soldiers

are sent off.”

“Aw, that’s so sweet. I can’t believe it’s all been destroyed.”

“Honestly, it feels like sabotage to me.”

Oh, yes. Word had been spreading. Left and right, no matter where I was, people were gossiping. It had come to a group consensus that there was a rat amongst the pack. Did I think that was true?

Well…I wasn’t sure.

It seemed a bit more complicated than that. Regrettably, I didn’t have the time to conduct a proper investigation on the matter. Neither could Kane with the growing pressures of the neighboring packs, wanting a final decision of action to be announced.

With the lab beyond repair, I returned to the medical ward where I resumed my usual rounds. For the last week, life had become bitterly monotonous. I’d get up, get dressed, grab a tea at breakfast, and head down to the medical ward on repeat.

The days passed with little to no effort. While I enjoyed working alongside Diana and the rest of the team, I deeply missed my work back in the lab. I missed the creative freedom, the hope, and the inspiration that came from developing something new.

That afternoon, I got to the ward and grabbed my clipboard off the main desk. Diana came up to my side with a light-hearted hum.

“You know everyone is glad to see you back here,” she said. “But I can’t help but notice that you’ve been looking a little glum lately.”

I let out a sigh. “Believe me, I’m glad to be back here, working with everyone again. It’s just…”

“You miss the lab,” she finished for me with an understanding smile.

I bit the corner of my bottom lip and felt my shoulders sag forward. “It’s silly, I know. My main priority should be here with the patients.”

Diana placed her hand on my shoulder and gave a light squeeze. “It’s not silly. I, and everyone else, know

that you were making a real difference with your work.”

“Well, clearly not everyone,” I mumbled under my breath.

I really wasn’t one to feel sorry for myself. I never saw the point of dwelling on things that couldn’t be fixed or changed. Yet, it was difficult to ignore the emptiness I felt in my chest.

Josie came by to pick up her own clipboard and medical coat. “Do you or Alpha Kane have any possible ideas as to who was responsible?” she asked, having overheard part of our conversation.

I solemnly shook my head. “Afraid not. With everything going on, not to mention I couldn’t find any viable proof while I was cleaning up the place. So, I suppose we’re just going to have to let the matter go.”

I slipped away from the pair and went about my rounds. When it came time for everyone to break for lunch, I opted to stay behind. I wasn’t really in the mood to be subjected to everyone’s excessive pity and

gossip.

In the meantime, I checked through the storage cabinets, taking note of all our current supplies. Anything to keep myself busy.

I heard a faint sound of someone clearing their throat. I turned to glance over my shoulder to see Kane, leaning against the far wall.

“Do I need to be concerned that you’ve decided to skip yet another meal?” he inquired with a raised brow.

I shrugged. “I just wasn’t that hungry,” I told him passively.
