He let out a non-committal hum and pushed off the wall. “I’ve noticed that you’ve been struggling these last few days.”

“It’s just been an adjustment, nothing more.”

Kane clicked his tongue, tsking. “You should know that you’re a terrible liar, sweetheart.”

My heart stuttered in my chest. I wondered if I would ever get used to hearing him use those types of pet

names with me.

“What would you like me to say then?” I tossed my clipboard down and fixed my hair back into a high ponytail.

I felt his eyes search me as though there was a hidden message happening behind them, and I wasn’t

able to see it.

“Why don’t we go out for an early dinner tonight?” he proposed.

My brows furrowed. “Are you sure?” Was now really the time to be making such frivolous plans? I mean, I knew it was only dinner. But surely he had more important things to do-making sure that all of the soldiers were ready, aligning with the other neighboring packs…

But at the same time, yes, I wanted to spend time with him. As much time as our situation allowed. At least when I still had my lab, I felt better knowing that there was a chance I could find a way to develop new ways to heal. The thought of something bad happening to Kane struck me like a horrible stab to the

heart.

“Okay,” I agree lightly. “Once I finish with my rounds today, I’ll get changed, and we can head out.”

He gave a swift nod and grinned.

Suddenly, I was graciously filled with a jovial sensation, knowing that I was getting a break from the repetitive routine that had consumed my recent days. I had no idea where he was planning on taking me.

I didn’t care.

I was just glad to be with him.

Later that early evening, I left work to head back to my room. I walked straight into the closet and decided on a simple flowy blouse and long floral skirt. I pinned back part of my hair and placed one of my mother’s necklaces around my neck.

Kane waited for me down in the main hall, wearing a nice dress shirt and dark pants. “Shall we?”

I placed my hand in the crook of his arm while he led me out to the car. “I’ve decided on Italian tonight.”

“Sounds perfect,” I said.

The drive to the restaurant wasn’t too long. We pulled up to a family-owned bistro in the nearest town.

Right as we walked in, the hostess brought us to the back to a private booth. The lighting was perfectly dimmed to add to the intimate ambiance.

Our conversation was kept light even as they brought our food out. Kane had settled on the Carbonara, while I got the Tortellini with brown butter and sage sauce. Every bite was utterly delectable.

When our dishes were taken away, I reached out to grab his hand across the table. Thank you for bringing me here,” I said. “It was a very sweet surprise that I didn’t realize I needed.”

Kane clasped my hand. “I’m glad to hear it,” he replied. “However, this wasn’t, technically, the surprise for the evening.”

My brows lifted in confusion. “What do you mean?”

Kane paid the bill, and we headed back to the house while my question remained hanging in the air between us. Instead of heading back to our room, Kane took my hand and pulled me to the far wing of

the house.

We stopped in front of the room where my lab used to be.

“Kane? What are we-”

He threw open the door to reveal an entirely refurbished chem lab, filled with brand new equipment and stocked with all fresh materials.

“Surprise,” he said with a smug curve of his mouth.
