Kane’s POV

“Surprise.”

There was no mistaking the tears that instantly filled Evelyn’s eyes. For a long moment, she merely stared at the room in front of her, probably unsure if what she was seeing was truly real.

Yes, I had refurbished the lab. I made sure that all of the previous equipment she had lost, along with all of the raw materials she needed to create the serum.

While we were at dinner before, I’d received a message from Henri, telling me that everything was delivered and set up for the big surprise. I did my best not to give any indication that this was going on.

Whether Evelyn was ever willing to admit it, she’d been horribly depressed. Ever since it was discovered that the lab had been destroyed, she’d lost the sparkle in her eyes. Seeing her get up each day like a mindless zombie was unimaginably frustrating.

Because I knew that she was suffering internally, and in complete silence. Sure, she went about her normal work in the medical ward, but she lacked all other emotions apart from the professional persona she put on for her patients.

I couldn’t stand it. It was torturous.

I noticed her pain, no matter how hard she tried to hide it behind a fake smile. And not once had she tried to bring up the possibility of getting the lab fixed. Evelyn merely carried on with life as though the lab never existed.

She never whined. Never complained. Hell, she never asked for anything in general.

A survival technique she must have acquired when living with her family. But I refused to be like them.

This woman deserved so much more than what life had dealt her from such a young age.

“I…” Evelyn’s voice cracked from the emotion that wanted to bubble up within her. “It’s back. A-All of its

back.”

I nodded. “Right down to the last test tube,” I said with a cheeky smile.

Evelyn wrapped her arms around herself while shaking her head in pure confusion. A little line formed between her brows. “But, why?” she whispered.

“Everyone knew how much you cared for this place and the work you were accomplishing here,” I stated. “I, on the other hand, can’t bear the sight of you suffering in silence.”

She opened her mouth as if to say something, but the words never came. Instead, Evelyn launched herself at him and circled her arms around my middle. She buried her face in my chest and let out a soft series of cries. I held her as she lightly shook.

I gently rested my chin on top of her head and held her close. “I hope these are happy tears,” I humored.

She pulled back and sniffled. “Yes,” she claimed. “I can’t believe you…This is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me.”

She took my face in her hands and pulled me in for a kiss. All that emotion and feeling I’d been missing from her these past several days came flooding back. I deepened the kiss with hungry reverence.

Scoring my hand through her hair, I tilted her head back and claimed her mouth with a feeling of possession I’d long been denied.

Evelyn melted in my hands. The scent of her growing arousal hit my senses, making it all too tempting to take her right there on the table in front of us. My wolf growled with burning approval.

Of course, all of that came to a crashing end when I heard the sound of Henri’s shoes marching toward the room. Regrettably, I pulled back and turned to face my beta with an irritated look.

“This better be good,” I muttered.

Evelyn’s tone filled with concern. “Henri, what is it?”

My anger shifted upon noticing how worried the guy looked. Slightly winded, he took a short minute to catch his breath.

“Sir… Our Southern borders are currently under attack,” he said. “Our other neighboring packs, who are closer to the border, have already sent in their soldiers.”

Evelyn went stiff. “So, it’s begun.”

My entire body grew tense. I raked a hand through my hair.

“We can’t let them get beyond the Valley. If they do, that means that everything beneath it is gone,” I said. “It’s been days since I put out my request to the king. If we don’t get his reply back within the next twenty- four hours, I may have to make the decision to move out without his full authority.”

I really hoped that it wouldn’t come to that. Especially, since this was what I’d been working toward for years. It was the sole reason why I had agreed to the arranged marriage in the first place. Granted, that was before I really got to know Evelyn and learned to value her, to deeply care for her.

Henri nodded. “I’ll make sure to have those stationed at the gate entrance, to keep their eyes out for any incoming letters,” he said.

With that, he slipped out of the room. I turned my attention back to Evelyn, who was still finding her composure. Sadly, our moment of intense passion had long passed.

She pulled her hair back from her face. “Well, I think I’ll get started on prepping a new batch of the Wolfsbane serum,” she said.

I raised my brows and let out a light chuckle. “Evelyn, as much as I admire your dedication, it’s late. Why don’t you start on it in the morning?” I suggested.

A slight blush bloomed over her cheeks Oh yeah, she agreed bashfully “You may be right”

Evelyn’s POV

I still couldn’t believe that Kane had the lab completely fixed. The shock from his surprise was 60 intense that my stomach continued to flutter like crazy I was gidly with excitement and an eager to get back into it

But he was right. It was late, and with the war becoming more imminent with each passing day, I needed to stay as focused as possible

Kane and I headed back to our room Most of the staff had already gone to their rooms for the evening. which left us to carefully and quietly make our way through the halls

As we got back, Kane shut the door behind us. I think I’m going to take a quick shower,” I told him

Okay,” he hummed Just as I entered the bathroom, he called out to me “Hang on Let me take your

necklace before you get into the shower”

A soft smile touched my lips at his concern. I undid the clasp and placed the delicate chain in his hand ” My mother’s box is over there on the dresser

Having taken a much-needed hot shower to help loosen up my tense muscles, I slipped on one of my oversized pajama shirts and stepped out of the bathroom. My eyes were drawn to Kane’s side of the bed, however, he wasn’t there

When I turned my head, my heart dropped into my stomach as I found him standing beside my mother’s old jewelry box, staring down at the will.

Oh, no

“Kane-

He snapped his eyes up to meet mine. His gaze filled with hurt and anger, his voice filled with

accusation

“Is this the whole reason why you decided to confess your ‘feelings’ to me?”
