Chapter 177

Evelyn’s POV

My eyes grew wide in shock. “What? No, Kane, I-”

“None of it was real, was it?”

My heart nearly cracked from the sheer devastation in his voice.

My throat grew tight and my eyes stung. “Of course, it was,” I argued. “How could you think otherwise?”

Kane wasn’t hearing me. He shook his head in furious denial. “And all that talk about having children,” he seethed. “That was all because of this, wasn’t it?!”

I shook my head, trying desperately for him to hear me out. “Would you please give me a chance to-”

“Because without conceiving an heir, you would never be able to achieve your true status. It’s all been a

lie.”

“That’s not true! Kane, would you please just let me explain? You need to know-”

I let out a sharp gasp as he tossed the papers at my feet. Whatever words I had left in my mouth immediately dissolved as I watched him storm out of the room.

It wasn’t until I truly knew I was alone that I allowed the tears to fall from my eyes. What the hell had just happened?!

What started out as an average day turned into a romantic evening, but ultimately ended in misunderstanding and tears. All because he found those papers my mother had left for me.

He was never supposed to find them. Not like that. Not with everything going on. I’d decided to chalk it all out to proper timing. As soon as the battle was fought and won, I was going to sit down with Kane and explain everything in my mother’s will.

But he wouldn’t even allow me that. Kane seriously thought that I’d been faking my feelings toward him in hopes of what? Getting pregnant so that I could achieve my rightful status??

At a time like this, my main concern aligned only with the overall well-being of the soldiers within this pack. Has that not been clear enough?

My gut churned with horrible distress and heartshattering loss. I clutched the sides of my head, feeling as though I was on the edge of spiraling. What did this mean for our relationship?

A terrible wave of tremors wracked through my body. I carefully bent down to collect the papers and stored them back in their original hiding spot.

I somehow convinced myself to climb into bed as opposed to leaving the bedroom to seek out Kane. Although considering he left in such a heated rush, perhaps it was better that I give him some space.

But the moment he came back to the room, I was going to firmly explain the truth behind those papers.

And how I hadn’t discovered their existence until after I had already begun to fall for him.

“How could you think that I was using you?” I asked out loud.

So, I waited. And waited…And waited.

But Kane hadn’t returned to the room. As the night drew on, it became harder to keep my eyes open. And no matter how hard I tried to keep awake, I felt my exhaustion get the better of me. Before I could stop myself, I’d fallen asleep.

My eyes snapped open while a rush of air hit my lungs. The room was still dark due to the sun not having fully risen above the treeline. Nevertheless, I scrambled to sit up, only to find myself completely

alone.

“Kane?” I called out. But there was no answer.

But his absence wasn’t what really woke me up. I swiftly slid out of bed and rushed over to the window. Through the blinds, I caught the heart-stopping sight of hundreds of soldiers marching toward the front

gates.

“What the hell?!” I shouted.

I barely had any time to throw on a pair of clothes before dashing out of the bedroom. Now, I really needed to find Kane. Had things grown worse along the southern border with the feral rogues?

Oh, Gods… Had the other neighboring packs fallen?

The thought alone was chilling, but I wasn’t about to assume anything until I could find Kane and get some real answers. However, he was nowhere to be found, which only made my anxiety worsen.

Having checked the gym, the lab, and then his office with no luck, I proceeded to run out the main doors. spotted Henri and, for a brief flicker of a moment, felt relief. If anyone was to know where Kane was, it

would have been him.

“Henri!”

He turned his head and saw that it was me. He ended whatever conversation he was having and walked

over to me.

“Henri, please. Tell me you know where Kane is,” I pleaded.

His brows furrowed. “He didn’t tell you?”

“Tell me what?” I pressed.

“The Alpha King’s approval came through earlier this morning. Kane decided to head out toward the southern part of the border beforehand to survey the situation and get in touch with the neighboring packs,” he explained. “His last order just came through. He’s sending all available troops to head South.”

I felt my blood run cold. So, it was official…Kane had declared war.

“So, he’s… He’s already gone,” I stated weakly.

I knew he was upset with me, but I never would have imagined that he would leave without so much as saying goodbye. A whole new wave of pain and heartache crashed through me.

The corners of my eyes blurred with unshed tears. No. No, I wouldn’t cry.

“Alright,” I said evenly. “Let me grab my medical bags, and I’ll be right back.”

As I turned to head back into the house, I felt the light touch of Henri’s hand resting on my shoulder. He

swiftly stopped me.

“Evelyn.” He gave me a contrite look. “Alpha Kane has given strict instructions that you are to remain here while the battle takes place.”

My eyes grew wide in unfathomable disbelief. “Excuse me?”

So, not only did this man leave without so much as telling me, but he’s gone as far as to bar me from the war that I had spent countless hours aiding and preparing for?

That bastard!

I took in a long, tense breath. I felt my wolf snarl from within me.

“Fine,” I hissed venomously. “Henri, you are to keep me strictly informed on everything that takes place.”

He rubbed the back of his neck, clearly conflicted. “I’m not sure-”

“That’s an order,” I snarled through clenched teeth.

I hastily turned on my heels and headed back into the house. Good God, was I pissed off.

With that same anger, I headed straight to the lab and got to work, developing a new batch of the serum. I’d lost track of time, but felt exceedingly confident in my skills. At some point, I heard a gentle tap on the door. Glancing up, I saw Diana with two mugs of tea in her hand.

“Hey, though you might need a little pick-me-up,” she said.

I offered a small smile. “Thanks.”

I accepted the tea and let her have a good look around. “I gotta say, I think it’s amazing that Kane commissioned for the lab to be rebuilt.”

“Yeah,” I commented quietly.

“Hey? Are you okay?” she asked. “I would have thought that, given the place has been fixed up, you would be thrilled.”

“Believe me, I was. It’s just…” My shoulders slumped.

Diana slid into one of the open stools and reached out to rest her hand on my arm. “You know that you

can tell me anything.”

“It’s kind of a long story,” I said. “But…Okay.”
