Chapter 178
Evelyn’s POV
Diana waited patiently for me to collect my thoughts.
I wasn’t entirely sure where to start when it came to my relationship with Kane. Mentioning anything regarding our marriage contract didn’t seem right. So, I decided it would be best to brush over it entirely.
“Everyone knows that my marriage to Kane was arranged through the Alpha King,” I started. Diana nodded, prompting me to continue. “My transition to this pack wasn’t the easiest, and Kane had more important things to focus on than our marriage.”
I took a tentative sip from my tea mug.
“In the beginning, Kane and I were very indifferent toward each other. But I found that as time went on, we started to spend more time together. He took on training me and ensuring that I developed a stronger bond with my own wolf. We went from seeing each other as an obligation to actual people. And somewhere down the line…”
“You ended up gaining real feelings for him,” she offered with a gentle smile.
I forced myself to ignore the ache in my chest as I nodded my head. “My own personal family life has always been messy. Ever since I lost my mother, I’d been at the mercy of my father and stepmother’s antics. But what I recently discovered was that my mother had left a hidden will.”
Diana’s brows lifted. “Oh, my Goddess,” she gasped. “And did you find it?”
I nodded. “Turns out, she left everything to me.” Her mouth fell open in utter shock. “Not only that, but she even told me the way I could unlock my inheritance as an Alpha.”
Poor Diana. Her jaw practically hit the floor. I watched her sway in her seat as though she were seconds away from toppling over.
She held up her hands. “H-Holy shit, Evelyn.”
“I know,” I said. “Please, please, don’t tell anyone, okay? It’s not something that needs to be broadcast all over the pack.”
Diana nodded her head with understanding. “Go on. How are you supposed to unlock this inheritance?”
I cast my eyes to the counter. “Based on what my mother wrote, in order for me to achieve my true
status, I would need to conceive a child.”
“So, what’s the problem?” she prompted. “Don’t you want to have children and a family of your own one day?”
“I’m not necessarily the problem in this situation. You see, Kane ended up finding the papers and now thinks that I’ve been lying about my feelings to him this whole time in order to get pregnant just so I can reach my alpha status,” I explained.

Again, her eyes grew wide. “Oh.”
My eyes stung. “I tried to explain to him that none of what he was thinking was true. I hadn’t even come into possession of those papers until recently.”
“And your feelings toward him go back much further than your mother’s will, correct?”
I solemnly nodded. “He thinks I’ve just been hiding these papers this whole time,” I muttered. “And now he’d gone off to fight his war against the rogues, and he didn’t even have the decency to say goodbye.”
Diana flinched at this piece of information. Her expression softened. “I’m sure that given little time, the two of you will sort this whole situation out.”
Somehow, I wasn’t feeling too confident about that.
For what it was worth, I actually felt a little better sharing my thoughts with Diana. I let her get back to her work in the medical ward while I continued mine in the lab. I purposely pushed any and all thoughts of Kane to the back of my mind.
Apart from creating more of the serum I’d used to treat Michael before, my work took me down a slightly different direction, in which I was able to incorporate Aloe. Whoever was behind the Wolfsbane injections could very likely have other similar tricks up their sleeve when it came to this war.
Who was to say that the rogues wouldn’t be fighting with poisoned weapons? If that were the case, then this new treatment would help cure the wounds externally.
I carefully placed this new creation of mine in several jars before finally giving myself a proper break. This time around, I wasn’t taking any chances. For those who were told to remain back at the house, I called over two guards to man the door of the lab.
I headed to the kitchen to find something to snack on. I grabbed an apple from one of the fruit bowls and began brewing another cup of tea.
“I’m faintly surprised that he made you stay behind.” Alexander’s voice spoke out from behind me.
I took in a sharp breath and turned around to face him. “And, I’m vaguely surprised that you’re here,” I said. “Given the current events, I would have thought that your father would have summoned you back.
Alexander sheepishly let his eyes drop to the floor. “He knows that if he truly needs me, he can reach me at any given time,” he noted. “I, however, am simply glad that I can be with you here. Unless, of course, you think that I was the one who destroyed your lab.”
I leaned against the counter and silently stirred my tea. “Alexander, it doesn’t matter what I think-”
“Yes, it does,” he said firmly. “Your opinion is the only one that I value above all others. Because, unlike a majority of the people here, you’re someone who is true and genuine. And, I’m sorry, I know you’ve told me half a dozen times now, but I still don’t like Kane.”
My heart clenched in my chest from merely hearing his name.

“Alexander,” I sighed.
“The way I see it, the bastard has done nothing but use you to his own pack’s advantage,” he remarked.” He had you in the medical ward, where you used your own natural abilities to heal countless people. Now, he has you creating cures and serums for the feral rogues that his soldiers decided to bring back here.”
I shook my head. “You’re wrong. Kane has never used me. I openly volunteered my abilities down in the medical ward. It was my decision to throw myself into the archives and find everything I could to find a possible cure.”
Just as Alexander was about to come back with another comment, one of the maids came rushing into the room, clutching a phone tightly in her hand.
“Luna Evelyn!”
immediately took it without question. “Hello, Henri?” There was no point trying to mask the
my tone.

His familiar voice came through slightly muffled. He sounded exhausted and maybe even injured himself. I struggle to keep my resolve in place as I can faintly hear the unsettling sound of the fight going on in the background.
“Evelyn, there are feral wolves attacking in larger numbers,” he said. “There are too many injured and are in need of immediate reinforcements.”
I was ready. “Alright, I’m making my way out there now.”
But Henri hadn’t immediately ended the call. He lingered on the other end of the line as though there was
still something he had to tell me.
“Henri? What is it?”
“…Kane has been deeply hurt.”
