Chapter 186
Evelyn’s POV
I struggled to keep my composure, but there was no stopping the wave of anxiety that started to simmer in my chest.
“What do you mean by ‘worse?” I questioned bluntly.
Cheryl took the moment to contemplate her words carefully. “Evelyn, what you need to keep in mind is that, at the time, your mother was pregnant. A lot of what she experienced herself had been dulled by the fact that her wolf half took the brunt of it.”
I gently shook my head.
Brooke took the chance to speak up. “What you need to understand is that this transformation you’ll be undertaking is brutal,” she explained. “It was entirely internal for your mother. Her pregnancy wouldn’t have lasted otherwise. Her wolf was the one who solely dealt with the change.”
“Your poor mother was always so tired,” Angie added with a gentle smile. “That was because of all the severe pressure that her wolf was placed under.”
I felt my throat go dry. “But, given the fact that I’m not pregnant…I’ll be going through this change along with my wolf.”
“Correct,” they said collectively.
I took a deep breath, preparing myself for the new set of information I was about to take in.
“What exactly am I to expect during this ‘transformation’?”
They all shared a look with each other, which did nothing for my jittery nerves.
“Well, for starters, you’re likely to expect mood swings,” Angie said.
Brooke nearly snorted into her teacup. “That’s putting it rather lightly, don’t you think?”
Cheryl tutted. “Ladies, please. Evelyn is already panicked enough,” she chastised. Her tone grew softer as she turned to me. “Yes, you will face mood swings, and they will vary depending on the situation.”
“So…One moment I’ll be feeling normal, and the next thing I know, I’ll be wanting to tear someone in half?” I asked fearfully.
“Pretty much.”
My stomach rolled into knots. “Great,” I said through clenched teeth. “What else?”
“You may be feeling your emotions on a deeper level going forward,” Brooke mentioned. “Happiness, excitement, worry, fear, sadness-you get the idea-they will all become heightened.”
Wonderful, I thought bitterly..

“It’s important that you have someone who is able to keep you grounded,” Angie said.
My mind instantly went to Kane. There was no one else I could imagine going through this with. Despite how we started, he somehow became that person who restored my confidence and kept me feeling
stable.
Even now, as my nervous system threatened to shut down on me, the mere thought of him gave my body the reprieve it desperately needed.
I nodded my head. “I think I’ll be okay in that department,” I confirmed. I picked up the teapot and proceeded to top off everyone’s cups.
“Your muscles will be terribly sore at times. There again, you’ll go from being able to run ten miles straight without breaking a sweat to not being able to get out of bed in the morning,” Cheryl said while stirring in her sugar.
“Think of it in terms of what we already mentioned. Should you feel a sudden burst of excitement or even anger, your best bet of letting it naturally take its course would be for you to run it out,” Brooke
elaborated.
I nodded. “That makes sense. Truthfully, I’d much rather try and turn these moments into something active than accidentally take it out on someone.”
The group collectively nodded. “Very true.”
Begrudgingly, Cheryl spoke up about this next part, which had me sinking further into my chair.
“You’ll be experiencing a stronger pull to your husband…romantically, speaking,” she grimaced.
Oh, goddess. My face flushed with blooming embarrassment. I was a grown woman, and somehow her words made me feel like an adolescent teenager getting ‘the talk’ from her parents.
“That being said,” Brooke added. “Because you’re coming into your Alpha, you may be feeling more
dominant-”
“I got it,” I said quickly.
There was no possible way that my face could get any redder. And to think, I was planning on relaying all of this information to Kane as soon as these ladies left…
As the conversation dwindled down, I noticed everyone’s behavior slightly shifted. The room grew quiet, and the three women all shared knowing looks amongst themselves.
“What?” I prompted. “What aren’t you telling me? Surely, it can’t get any worse than what you’ve all been telling me.”
Cheryl set her teacup down on the table and folded her hands in her lap. “It can,” she said patiently. “But it’s not something that will happen indifferently.”
I couldn’t handle the suspense. It was bad enough, knowing that I wasn’t going to have complete control

over my own body in these coming weeks or months; I couldn’t deal with any more surprises.
“We cannot express how important it is that you maintain control over your wolf during this transformation,” Cheryl announced. “Although Silver Wolves are rare, they are not the only unique breeds in the world that undergo a similar transformation.”
“There have been stories of other women who have gone through this kind of change, and they have
come out entirely altered. And not for the better,” Angie stated.
“Too much negativity, pressure, and stress, and not enough help-they turned dark.”
I took in a shuddering breath. My anxiety mellowed to something far worse. Fear.
“Are you saying that I could become evil?” I asked, feeling numb.
Cheryl held up her hands. “Believe me, Evelyn, we’re not telling you all of this to frighten you,” she said. ” There is always a chance that something like that could happen; however, we have full confidence that you will not let it get to that point.”
“That’s why it’s imperative for you to have a strong support system,” Angie acknowledged.
Beyond that, the ladies happily shifted the conversation to a much brighter topic. Now that the feral rogues were taken care of, the community would be able to resume their annual event without any worry of a catastrophe.
When it came time for everyone to leave, Cheryl briefly took me aside. “I hope you’re still considering joining us for our end of the summer getaway,” she reminded me.
“I don’t know,” I said sheepishly. “I feel like, given everything that’s happened, people might still need me around.”
Cheryl gave me a pointed look. “I think that considering everything that’s happened, you’re all the more entitled to take some time for yourself.”
I bit the inside of my cheek. “I’ll let you know as the date gets closer.”
As soon as they left, I headed to Kane’s office, wanting to tell him everything I found out. When I got there, he’d been working through a pile of letters. I noticed the quizzical arch of his brow and hesitated to approach.
“Is everything alright?”
He let out a dry chuckle, but his smile didn’t remain. Kane was contemplative.
“A letter from Alpha King arrived this morning,” he said.
My brows raised. “Oh?”
“He wants you and me to attend some private, formal gathering.”
I folded my arms over my chest. “But why?”

There was something critical in his voice as he spoke. “He claims that there is some serious business he needs to discuss with us regarding the war,” he said.
