Chapter 185
Evelyn’s POV
The following days that came after the battle felt rather surreal.
For starters, Kane refused to leave my side. Even though there were a multitude of things that required his attention, he decided that both our physical and mental well-being were to be put first.
Kane had even put out a public statement after a slew of reporters tried to bombard the gates. Everyone in the northern territories wanted to know the details of what had taken place during the battle.
Truthfully, he had put out two statements. The first, which was meant for the general public, possessed a softer, less gritty tone for the whole ordeal. Whereas the second held the full story of my involvement- that which had been sent directly to the Alpha King.
However, in both cases, I decided that it would be best to keep my current situation involving my altered status. Until we gained more information on what I could anticipate from this, I wanted as few people as possible to know.
Another thing that struck me as odd was how the other pack member kept perceiving me. Each time I entered a room or a different part of the house, everyone stopped what they were doing and bowed their
heads at me.
The first couple of times, I froze on the spot, not knowing what to do. Of course, Kane found it cheerfully
amusing.
“They’re just showing their respect since you’re the one who basically saved their Alpha,” he hummed.
I shook my head in bewilderment. “If that’s truly the case, then they should really be bowing to Henri. He’s the one who got you back to the medi tent.”
Kane shrugged but never lost his grin. “I gave my thanks to Henri. But he wasn’t the one who drew that feral rogue away from us, nor is he the one who created the healing slave that healed not only my leg but several dozens of other soldiers.” 1
I let out an indignant huff, which resulted in Kane letting out a hearty chuckle. “Can’t you just accept the gratitude and the praise?”
“Not easily, no,” I grumbled.
To me, it was never about the attention or the praise. All of my work, all of those hours spent in the lab, was for the overall benefit of the pack.
“Well, then I suppose you’re just going to have to get used to it,” he told me.
Nevertheless, I spent the last several days cataloging my everyday activities, per Dr. Borsheim’s request. Thus far, I hadn’t experienced anything really noticeable since the battle.
When Kane and I went down to his office for my scheduled checkup, he wasn’t able to detect any major

change in any of my vitals. If it hadn’t been for the dozens of testimonies from other pack members, I would have sworn that I imagined the whole thing.
I had walked out of his office feeling bothered and deeply puzzled. Kane pulled me into his side, placing a chaste kiss on my head.
“Don’t feel deterred by this,” he said.
I shook my head. “I just don’t understand. I felt my entire body go into manic shock, and now it’s as if it never happened in the first place.”
“Remember, we don’t know what to expect from this,” he reminded me. “Why don’t you reach out to Cheryl and the others? I know we spoke about it a couple of days ago, but it might help give you some clarity.”
He was right. The only way I was likely to get any possible answers about this would be if I were to ask the very people who were the closest to my mother.
I’d decided to send Cheryl a letter of invitation for afternoon tea along with Brooke and Angie. I knew I could have easily called her, but I didn’t want to make things sound more urgent than they were.
Upon receiving their letter back, I hastily spoke to the kitchen staff to have everything planned out in advance.
Two days later, that afternoon, I was pacing the drawing room. My stomach was in complete knots.
Why was I so nervous?
Well, that morning, it had shockingly occurred to me that in order to hopefully get the answers I needed, I was going to have to explain the whole story as to how I initiated the cycle of unlocking my Silver Wolf.
Not only did I have to own up to the fact that I basically charged into an ongoing war, but also that I nearly got my throat torn out by a feral wolf.
When Cheryl and the others had arrived, I pasted on the best convincing smile I could and greeted them.
“Oh, my dear!” Angie gushed. “You’re looking surprisingly well considering all the insanity that’s gone on.”
“Truly,” Brooke noted.
Cheryl pulled me in for a real hug. “Now, tell me honestly, what prompted you to reach out like this?”
A mild blush bloomed over my cheeks. “Right. Well, I found mom’s hidden will.”
The three of them lit up in looks of shock and astonishment. I spent the next half an hour explaining how I stumbled across the hidden documents and what they contained. Cheryl was truly smug over the knowledge that I was technically the rightful owner of my mother’s estate and assets.
Tea had been served, and I prepared myself for the real nitty-gritty part. “Okay, so, the real reason why I called for you all is that I need to know what sort of symptoms my mother experienced while she was undergoing her transformation into a Silver Wolf.”

Brooke and Angie shared an expression of pure shock. Cheryl’s lips parted. “Evelyn… Are you pregnant?”
I gently shook my head. “No. I unintentionally activated the secondary option of the inehrtience clause.”
Cheryl placed her teacup down. “Evelyn, that would mean that you would have had to have saved your true mate’s life in an act of self-sacrificial efforts.” Her eyes slowly widened the longer I remained silent. Are you telling us that your true mate is really Kane?”
“More importantly, what do you mean that you ‘saved his life”?” Brooke questioned.
“What aren’t you telling us?”
“Okay, so, please don’t panic when I say this,” I quickly said. “While the war was going on, I was informed that Kane had been badly injured, and I rushed to the battlefield to help heal him and the others.”
“I already don’t like where this story is headed,” Cheryl muttered.
“When I found Kane, his leg had been really badly torn up. I needed to get him back to the medi tent so he could be properly treated; however, one of the feral wolves caught sight of us. I needed to get Kane the help he needed, so I ordered his beta to take him back while I distracted the rogue.”
“Oh, my Goddess, tell me you didn’t…”
I scrunched my nose. “I did.”
I went on to tell them how I ran for my life and was eventually caught. I tried my best to explain the feeling that occurred in my chest, as well as what ended up transpiring from it. By the time I brought them all up to speed, I was breathless.
Cheryl buried her face in her hand before lifting her head up to shoot me a glare.
“Well, it’s quite obvious. You are your mother’s daughter,” she stated. “However, there is a very unlikely chance that your transition is going to be anything like your mother’s.”
“Meaning?”
“Meaning that it’s going to be far worse.”
