Chapter 187
Kane’s POV
Whether or not Evelyn was aware, I’d been keeping a close eye on her.
Ever since we returned from the battle, I’d been searching for any visible signs of her emerging Alpha. While Dr. Borsheim told Evelyn to keep a journal on herself, I started keeping one myself.
For the last couple of nights, I found her sleep to be broken and restless. Evelyn would fall asleep almost as soon as we turned out the lights, but as soon as her body entered that state of REM, she would begin to toss and turn.
Sometimes, she would mumble something incoherent or even whimper as though she were in pain. I’d carefully nudge her and rouse her from whatever nightmare was haunting her.
When I would try and question Evelyn about them in the morning, she never seemed to remember them. Or, at least, that’s what she claimed.
What had me so concerned was that I could visually see the effect it had on her. Evelyn often woke up with circles under her eyes. Her movements were sluggish, yet she persisted on with her work.
She was back in the lab before anyone could say otherwise. Losing her time in that lab or working in the medical ward where she was needed. It had become her way of forgetting the horrors of what took place.
I couldn’t blame her.
Part of me still felt horribly guilty that she had gotten mixed up in all of my dangerous business. My wolf was utterly distraught the moment we saw her rush across the battlefield. I never anticipated her becoming so involved.
I’m grateful she had. Evelyn was invaluable.
She not only saved my life but also ensured the future of this pack. The entire region owes her a debt of gratitude and recognition.
But she was now paying the price for her courage and her endless dedication. So I kept to her like a second shadow. Each time she winced in discomfort, my heart twisted a little in my chest.
Today had been the first time since the battle began that I parted from Evelyn’s side. Although I wasn’t keen on the idea, she deserved to have some time alone with Cheryl and the others.
In the meantime, I scored through all of the papers that came flooding onto my desk. But the one letter that mainly captured my attention was a request from the Alpha King.
Reluctantly, I tore open the seal and read through the letter.
Alpha Kane,
Allow me to extend my congratulations once more. News of your pack’s valiance and perseverance

during such a treacherous time have bled across the region. You have done your territory justice and can rest assured that I will happily grant you a favor in the future.
I was, however, rather unnerved to find out that Evelyn had been so closely involved with this war. You and I are fortunate that no real harm has come to her. You are aware of the close relation I once had with Evelyn’s mother. It has come as very little surprise to me that Evelyn has been the one to uncover the root cause behind the rogues’ feral behavior, as well as finding a workable cure.
She gets her brilliance from her mother, and I can easily say that there will be a number of other chemists who would love to work alongside her.
Nevertheless, my true reason for reaching out is because there is some serious business that needs to be discussed. You and Evelyn are to join me for a private gathering in three days’ time.
Your King
The corner of my mouth pulled upward into a sneer. It wasn’t a request but a demand.
I dropped the letter onto my desk and rubbed my hand over my tired face. There was so much to unpack from this damn message; I wasn’t even sure where to start. First of all, what the fuck did he mean that there would be a ‘number of other chemists who would love to work alongside her’?
