Chapter 188

Of course, she was brilliant and deserved every opportunity to better explore the field. But the mere thought of Evelyn leaving the pack to go work in some upscale laboratory caused my stomach to fill with lead.

But, knowing the King, he would easily make Evelyn out to be a public spectacle. He’d have her face and name plastered all over the region. But fame and fortune was never what Evelyn wanted. She wasn’t that kind of person.

Surely, the Alpha King knew that, at least.

Nevertheless, the bastard was now demanding that Evelyn and I attend some kind of gathering. Couldn’t he take the goddamned hint that we were still in recovery?

“Ridiculous,” I muttered to myself.

The door of my office suddenly opened, and in came Evelyn. As always, she looked tired. There was no mistaking the glimmer of worry that curved around her eyes.

Before I could ask her what was wrong, she noted the letter on my desk. I handed it over for her to read.

Much like myself, her brows furrowed in puzzlement. “What sort of business would he need to discuss?”

I shook my head, not having the faintest idea. Evelyn’s features suddenly grew strained, and she winced, dropping the letter to the floor. I jumped up from my chair and rushed to her side before she swayed off

her feet.

“I’m okay,” she said weakly. “It’s just a headache.”

I lowered her down into one of the chairs and got her a glass of water. She took a few tentative sips and steadied her breathing.

“I don’t want you to worry about this meeting, understand?” I asked softly.

“It’s not as though we can simply ignore it,” she said.

I smiled. “No, unfortunately we can’t. But your health and well-being come first for me. If, come the day of the gathering, you’re not feeling one hundred percent alright, I’ll be more than glad to send a message of postponement back.”

Evelyn smiled at my cheeky retort and finished her water.

“How was your afternoon?” I inquired.

“Insightful,” she said stiffly.

I unconsciously brought my hand up to cup her cheek. I saw the panicked storm brewing in the depths. of her eyes.

Evelyn spent the remainder of the afternoon telling me everything that Cheryl and others had mentioned

to her. At last, I was able to fully comprehend the haunted look in her eyes.

Unfortunately, that look remained firmly in place for the remainder of the day. The two of us took our dinner in my office, not wanting to be around the excessive commotion of the others.

Evelyn said very little, but it wasn’t difficult to understand why. I, too, was rather shocked about what

those women had told her.

When it came time for her and me to head to bed, Evelyn opted for a shower while I slid beneath the covers. I took the time to contemplate a few things. Yes, I was intrigued by what the king had to say to us.

But on a deeper, personal level, my mind was locked on my marriage. Before I could allow my train of thought to become too deep, I heard a familiar whimper tear through the air.

I quickly shot out of bed and rushed to the bathroom.

“Evelyn?” I called out frantically.

I found her braced over the counter wrapped in nothing more than a towel. Her hair was still dripping wet, and her eyes were red. Had she been crying?

slowly approached her side. She lifted her head to stare back at me through the reflection of the mirror.

“What if the transformation doesn’t go well?” she asked. “What if I turn out to be…evil?”
