Chapter 189
Evelyn’s POV
I couldn’t manage to fully turn around to face Kane. My eyes were still red from all the tears I’d silently
shed while I was in the shower.
I’d been mentally stewing on what Cheryl and the others had told me about for nearly the whole day. I did my best to hide my worry and anxiety behind a resolute mask. But the more I tried to ignore it, the worse the feeling got.
Having taken in all that information compounded my stress, causing me to pose several unanswerable
questions.
What if something were to go wrong during the transformation period? What if Kane wasn’t able to keep me grounded? What if I ended up hurting someone I cared about? What if… What if… What if…
The more the questions came, the worse my stress grew. I couldn’t handle the uncertainty of it all. It was
too much.
As soon as I was alone, I finally had the chance to let out what I’d been keeping in. Several tremors wracked through my body while a stream of tears blurred my vision.
The fear that coursed through my system was so fierce, it caused my knees to buckle and my legs to give out beneath me. The possibility of turning into something I didn’t even recognize was unlike anything I’d ever experienced.
Thankfully, the sound of the flowing water from the showerhead was enough to muffle the sound of my cries. Unfortunately, once I managed to turn the water off, there was nothing to dull the sound.
I had a faint feeling that Kane would rush in the moment he’d heard me. Sure enough, he had. His frantic look of worry sent chills down my spine and my cheeks blush.
Before I could stop myself, the words fumbled out of my mouth. “What if the transformation doesn’t go well? What if I turn out to be…evil?”
Kane’s expression darkened with incredulity. “How could you even suggest that?”
I tucked my head toward my chest in shame. I sensed his presence draw in closer. Kane reached out, curling his fingers under my chin to lift up my head.
“Evelyn, look at me,” he demanded. His voice grew tense. “Look. At. Me.”
I tore my gaze up from the floor to find an imploring look staring back at me.
“You are one of the kindest, considerate, self-sacrificing people I’ve ever known,” Kane announced. His chest filled with air as though he were talking with pride. “The mere thought that you could even remotely believe that you could turn dark from this transformation is obscene.”
“But still possible,” I hissed.

His glare grew tense. Without speaking another word, Kane grabbed the back of my thighs and hoisted my feet off the ground. I scrambled to hold onto him as he carried me back into the bedroom.
He tugged the towel from around my body and unceremoniously dropped me on to the mattress. A broken gasp tore from the back of my throat as I gaped up at the man in shock.
His glare was intense. “You listen to me very carefully,” he ordered. “You’re not going to turn evil or go dark during this transformation. Want to know why?”
I clenched my jaw. “Enlighten me then.”
The corner of his mouth pulled into a knowing smirk. “Because I’m not going to let you,” he said. You were told that you’re going to need someone to keep you grounded, and that someone is me.”
I was tempted to let another dry retort; however, all thoughts vanished as he lowered himself down to his knees. “In fact, I believe I’ve been rather remiss in my responsibilities,” he hummed.
The air caught in my lungs as he placed both of his hands on top of my thighs. He parted my legs, exposing my slick center to the room. I felt the blush from my cheeks travel down the length of my body.
“K-Kane?”
He leaned forward and began trailing a long line of kisses along the inside of my thigh. My entire body reacted instantly. My spine bowed off the bed as his lips drew closer to my core. He placed a long, lingering kiss on my mound.
A broken cry snapped from my chest the second I felt his tongue lick a long line through my folds. Kane pressed the pad of his thumb against my clit, slowly circling the swollen bud.
“Ah! Oh, my Gods,” I moaned wantonly.
I tried to lift my hips up to better meet his touch. He slid two fingers into me, curling them against my inner walls. My mouth fell open as he repeatedly hit that special hidden spot. Gods, I needed more!
No matter how much I tried to move, Kane kept my lower half pressed firmly against the mattress. I hardly took notice of all the crudish noises that spilled from my mouth.
“That’s it,” he coaxed smoothly. My eyes fluttered shut while that familiar sensation burned below my abdomen. “No, no. Open your eyes, sweetheart. I want you to see who’s making you fall apart like this.”
I worked my eyes open. My brows drew together, annoyed by his arrogance. But oddly enough, that irritation didn’t last long. When Kane brought his mouth back to my center and circled my clit with his tongue, my mind went blank.
“You’re never going to turn dark, Evelyn,” he groaned between harsh licks. “I’m not going to let that happen. Ever.”
He quickened his pace, causing that simmering feeling to grow stronger. “Kane,” I moaned, breathlessly.
“Fuck, that’s it. I can feel how close you are,” he whispered. The feeling of his lips moving against my

core was obscene. But it kept pushing me further to that glorious edge.
“If you ever feel like you’re heading into a dark place in your mind, you come to me,” he insisted. “I’m going to ground you and remind you of how important you are.”
“Yes,” I gasped.
“Now, be a good girl and come for me,” he said roughly.
His words pushed me over the edge. Millions of stars exploded behind my eyes. My whole body shook from the fierce, overwhelming wave of pleasure that crashed over me. I cried out his name and felt my muscles go lax.
Good Gods…
With a satisfied smile painted across his face, Kane stood up and pulled the two of us back under the covers. He placed my head in the crook of his neck and wrapped his arms securely around me.
Kane pressed a chaste kiss to my head and turned off the lamp. Whatever worries I had were long gone.
“I promise, we’re going to face this change together,” he said.
I graciously held onto him, taking in his familiar scent. Woodys. Clean. Safe.
“Thank you,” I whispered.
He was right. Whatever became of this transformation, we would face it together. I couldn’t let my fears distort my journey into this new chapter of my life. Both my wolf and I were satiated for the time being.
All I needed was a pleasant reminder that I wasn’t alone to face the unknown.
