Jackson looked down and said quietly, “It’s fine. I know you’re not like that.”
She was his sister’s best friend. He’d seen her plenty of times and heard enough from Tracy to know the real Natalie. There was no way he’d believe Leon’s trash talk.
Seeing them so close made the veins in Leon’s neck bulge. “Mind your own business,” he spat. “I could have you locked up for assault.”
Jackson just smirked. “Go ahead and try.”
He couldn’t stand men like Leon, who treated Natalie like a tool while having zero feelings for her. It was pathetic.
“You…” Leon’s chest heaved. “Oh, I get it. You’re just another social climber looking for a piece of the Sand family fortune. But there’s a line, pal. Natalie loves me. One word from me and she’ll be back on her knees begging for a scrap of my attention.”
Leon knew exactly how much the Sand name was worth. If he’d known her background from the start, he would have chained her to his side by any means necessary.
Natalie let out a cold laugh. “Leon, don’t assume everyone is as twisted and desperate as you. I was an idiot to ever look at you, but we’re done. Get lost. If you’re still standing here in ten seconds, I’m calling my brother and telling him to pull every cent of funding. I’ll make sure you have nothing left.”
She pulled out her phone and started dialing. Panic finally hit Leon, and he backed off, scurrying toward his car.
“You’ll regret this!” he yelled over his shoulder as he sped away.
Natalie was exhausted. Earlier, she hadn’t dared to push him too hard without backup, knowing how unstable he was. But with Jackson there, she felt safe enough to actually threaten the prick. She realized she’d been too soft; she needed Bryan to turn up the heat until Leon had nothing left to lose.
Sitting in Jackson’s car, her head was still spinning. The familiar scent of his interior was the only thing grounding her. She felt lightheaded and completely out of it. As Jackson climbed into the driver’s seat, she suddenly lunged toward him.
Jackson flinched, trying to move back, but she grabbed him by the shoulders and pressed her lips against his.
Jackson’s eyes went wide. He couldn’t believe she was actually doing this. Her technique was terrible. It felt more like clumsy biting than a kiss and it was anything but comfortable. He tried to peel her off, but she clung to him like a burr.
She eventually pulled back just enough to slap his cheek lightly, mumbling, “Are you a statue? You don’t even know how to kiss. What a waste of a pretty face. And here I am, actually liking you.”-
Jackson was speechless.
He watched her hand start wandering, tracing mindless circles on his chest. His throat tightened, and he

grabbed her wrist to stop her. His sister’s best friend was officially hitting on him and she’d just kissed him.
“Natalie,” he said, his voice low. “Do you even know what you’re doing right now?”
Natalie opened her mouth to answer, but her stomach did a violent flip. Before she could move, she threw up all over him.
The exertion was the final straw. After she finished retching, her world went black, and she passed out cold.
Natalie didn’t wake up until noon the next day, jolted conscious by her buzzing phone.
Her head felt like it was being split open with an axe. she squinted at the screen. iIt was Lana. No doubt calling to nag her about that blind date again. It was pathetic how desperate her aunt was to marry her off when even her own parents weren’t worried.
She ignored the call and tossed the phone aside, staring up at a ceiling she didn’t recognize. Her brain was a total fog.
Slowly, the memories started to trickle back. Jackson mentioned a blind date. She got depressed and went to a bar. She called Bryan for a ride, but ran into Leon instead. Then Jackson showed up, punched Leon, and took her away.
