.Chapter 27-3
“I know!” I agreed, gesturing with my spoon. “That’s because…” I bit my lip, hesitating for a second
too long. “He’s my fated mate, Finn.”
“The father of your ex-fiancé is your fated mate?!” he shrieked in a whisper, his eyes almost bulging
out of his face as I frantically shushed him.
“Shhh!” I looked at the doors again, sure I’d seen movement through the tiny glass window, but there was nothing there. Must have been a trick of the light. “It sounds insane but yes. That’s not all, though. Everything was going fine, we were getting close to the mountain, when Kellan’s enforcers found us again.”
I paused, the memory still painful even after all this time. “I overheard Kane talking to one of them, telling the guy he’d surrender me to them. So I confronted him and we fought… I ended up rejecting him and the mate bond.”
“What?” Finn asked, leaning forward with concern. “And what happened next?”
“I ran back home as fast as I could. This is the first time we’ve seen each other since that day.” I stirred my ice cream absently, not really hungry anymore. “He told me tonight that he was lying when he spoke to those enforcers, that he was trying to buy me time to escape. And a part of me, a big one, wants to believe him… but I just don’t know. I’m afraid he’ll end up hurting me again, and it’s not just me I have to think about anymore…”
“Simone?” Finn tilted his head in confusion and asked with a carefully controlled voice, “What are you talking about?”
I took a deep breath, knowing there was no going back once I said this. “You can’t tell anyone, Finn. My parents and Saul know, but no one else. Not even Dash.”
“Okay…” he said slowly, clearly bracing himself for whatever bombshell I was about to drop.
“I’m pregnant,” I admitted out loud, and it felt good to be able to tell another person finally. “With Kane’s baby.”
Finn stared at me open-mouthed, completely speechless for a long moment. Then he shook his head as if clearing it and stood up, walking around the table to pull me into a tight hug.
“Congratulations, kid. That’s wonderful news!” he said, and tears clogged my throat at his genuinely happy reaction. It felt terribly comforting after months of keeping this secret locked
away.
“Thanks, uncle,” I whispered against his shoulder, allowing myself this moment of comfort.

Chapter 27-3
He patted my head gently before sitting back down, his expression thoughtful. “I must admit, I never thought you had this kind of history with him when I first asked about the tension in that room. I just thought you’d met him and hit it off, but damn, that’s one hell of a complicated first
love, Simone.”
Chairm
He smiled at me warmly, and I could see the wheels turning in his head as he processed everything
I’d told him.
“And, if it helps at all, I do believe him about lying to those enforcers. Of course, I didn’t know him before these past few weeks, but you should’ve seen him all this time while he was staying with us. He’s been a complete mess. It makes sense that it was because you rejected him.”
“What do you mean?” I asked, wanting to hear more.
“He had a hard time eating and sleeping, rarely let anyone touch him. He was basically a damn zombie. He told us he was searching for someone important to him, and he’s been constantly asking about the differences between lycans and wolves, about mate bonds and rejection. When we couldn’t find him around pack grounds during the day, we’d always find him in the library, doing research.” Finn’s expression grew serious. “I hadn’t seen him look truly alive until today in that meeting room when he finally laid eyes on you. He was a new mah. The change was incredible.”
I looked up at Finn and saw nothing but honesty in his eyes. He wasn’t just telling me what I wanted to hear, he was sharing his genuine observations.
“Of course,” he continued with a slight grin, “now I’m gonna have to keep a much closer eye on him and be ready to tear him apart alongside Kiana, Troy, and Dash if he does anything remotely wrong. But I’m here for you, kid, for whatever you decide to do about him.”
He reached across the table and squeezed my hand. “Follow your heart, that’s always been the right way. Look at your parents, they could barely stand each other when they first met. Troy would’ve rather died than admit he wanted to be with her, and it took them three years before they finally saw reason.”
His smile turned fond as he remembered their ‘courtship’. “Time is precious with the people you love, Simone. Don’t follow your parents’ footsteps and waste years being stubborn. If you want him, if your heart and your wolf are telling you he’s the one, then don’t wait. Life’s too short and too dangerous to spend it alone when you could be with your mate.”
I nodded slowly, feeling some of the weight lift off my shoulders. It wouldn’t take me years to make up my mind, that was for sure.
A few more days with Kane, watching how he interacted with my family, seeing if his actions matched his words, and I’d either give up my fears and kiss him senseless in front of everyone, or
