.Chapter 27-2

“Fuck,” I cursed, my face burning with embarrassment. This was exactly what I didn’t need right now, my honorary uncle catching me having wild sex with a guest.

“W-Why were you here, Finn?” I asked, trying to regain some semblance of dignity while my hair was still a mess and I probably looked thoroughly debauched.

“I was going to make sure Kane was settled in properly and ask him if he wanted a beer,” he snorted with barely contained laughter. “You got that first part covered though.”

“Shut up,” I grunted, my face burning even redder. “I shouldn’t have done that. Shit.” I rubbed my face with my hands, already stressed by my impulsive actions. What had I been thinking? Oh right. I hadn’t been thinking at all.

“Look, kid. I will be forgetting everything that happened tonight, that’s for sure. I do NOT want that memory permanently etched in my mind,” he said with an exaggerated shudder. “But I know you, Simone. And I can see you need someone to talk to. I’m gonna make a wild suggestion and say you don’t want to talk to Kiana about this, and I know Kenzi and Irene were the ones you’d normally

ask for advice.”

His expression softened as he continued. “I’m shitty at anything heart-related, but you can trust your uncle, kid. I’ve got decades of experience making terrible romantic decisions, so maybe I can help you avoid some of my mistakes.”

For a big part of my teenage years, I’d found it hilarious that all of my parents’ friends kept calling themselves aunts and uncles, even when none of them were blood-related. But they were family in every way that mattered, and I trusted all of them implicitly. Finn had been there for mostly every major moment of my life, so why not one more?

“I’d like some advice, yeah,” I admitted, my voice smaller than I’d intended.

“Let’s go,” Finn offered me his arm like a gentleman and led me toward the empty kitchen. “There’s got to be some ice cream somewhere here. All the best conversations happen over ice cream.” “The second fridge,” I pointed, grateful for his easy acceptance and lack of judgment. This was why I loved my chosen family, they took everything in stride.

Finn fished out a container of cherry ice cream and grabbed two spoons from a drawer, settling across from me at the kitchen table like we’d done countless times over the years.

“Come on, out with it,” he said, digging into the ice cream. “And don’t leave out any details. Well, maybe leave out the details I just witnessed. I’m trying to block those out.”

I looked around and checked that both doors were closed before I took a deep breath and decided

to start from the beginning.

“I met Kane a bit more than three months ago,” I admitted, watching Finn’s face for his reaction.

He lifted his eyebrows in surprise but kept quiet, gesturing for me to continue while he ate his ice

cream.

“He saved me from Kellan’s enforcers, then saved me from some beasts, then also saved me from falling off a cliff,” I laughed nervously. “He offered to accompany me safely to my pack, and I let him. I thought I could always leave him once we were close enough so he didn’t know our exact position, you know? Keep him from learning too much about our defenses.”

“Smart thinking, Finn nodded approvingly.

“But then he got injured fighting those beasts to protect me, and I helped him heal… one thing led to another, and the next thing I knew, I was head over heels for him. Honestly, I might’ve fallen for him the first time I saw him.” I spooned some ice cream into my mouth, needing the cold sweetness to calm my nerves.

“Really?” Finn asked in genuine surprise. “That doesn’t sound like you at all. You’re usually so cautious with your heart.”
