“I told you this before. You’re the only woman for me, Simone. I meant it. I want you. I lo-” He
paused, clearing his throat. “I loathe to see you insecure.”
I stared at him for a moment, wondering what he’d been about to say. Then I shook my head and
focused on the phone.
“I’m fine,” I said, starting to type again.
Kane says there’s a new addition to his court. A bitch called Lania. She walked me to my room and
made sure to put her hands all over Kane. No skin to skin, though.
Dash’s response came quickly: Maybe she’s into dangerous guys?
But it was Finn’s message that made me pause: Be careful. She might be testing the curse or seeing
your reactions.
That actually made sense. I looked up at Kane. “Maybe she was seeing how you reacted? Kellan knew about your curse? He might want to know if you still have it.”
“I’m not sure if anyone told him, but you’re probably right,” Kane nodded. His expression darkened. “I’ll cut off her hands if she touches me again.”
Before I could respond, my phone buzzed with another message, this time from Elonso.
Wait. You said Lania? Is she a redhead? Five foot six, nasal voice, probably in her late fifties?
I made a surprised noise, feeling Kane’s breath on my neck as he leaned closer to read the message. I had to swallow hard before I could type a response:
Yes. Bitchy and too flirty? Sounds like her.
Fuck. Elonso cursed.
What’s up with the suspense? London sent, complete with an eye-rolling emoji.
For a few seconds, Elonso’s name kept typing on the chat. Until he finally sent: I know her. I thought she was dead. Let me find her file and send it to you. She was part of Morven’s circle, fled when Morven was killed. I’ve tried to locate her and end her myself, alongside the rest of Morven’s friends,
but she slipped from my claws. I see she’s been there all this time.
He attached a file with several pages of information on Lania Elda. Her picture was accurate, just several years younger. I remembered hearing about Morven. He’d been Elonso’s predecessor and a complete monster, especially to my mother. According to this, Lania was cut from the same
cloth.

If she escaped before we destroyed the lab… My Dad sent.
I was about to demand they explain what the hell they were talking about when Mom’s message
came through.
Then Lania Elda took Morven’s shifter-altering drug to Aerith Kingdom, and they’ve been
experimenting with it since. That’s why we’ve encountered so many creatures recently, all targeting us.
And all more difficult to kill.
My blood ran cold as the implications hit me. Those enhanced beasts had been systematically creating weapons designed specifically to kill us. And the woman who’d been flirting with my mate all evening was the architect behind it all.
