.Chapter 31-2
I was so screwed.

It was late when I finally stepped out of the shower, my skin pink from the hot water and my
muscles relaxed for the first time all day. Someone had left clothes in the wardrobe, expensive
dresses that were definitely not my style but would serve their purpose. Tomorrow I’d need to look
the part of whatever Kellan wanted me to be.
The plan was straightforward enough. Kane would serve as a distraction, drawing Kellan’s attention while I went to check the dungeons. The guards had confiscated my phone when we’d arrived, but they hadn’t bothered to check Kane, assuming he was just delivering a prisoner. I needed to get that phone from him so I could update the others on our progress…
I was so deep in thought, mentally reviewing every detail of tomorrow’s mission, that I nearly jumped out of my skin when part of the wall moved and Kane stepped through what was apparently a hidden door.
“What the hell?” I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs. “How did you know it was
there?!”
“I’m literally the king,” he said, rolling his eyes at my surprise. Then his expression shifted to concern as he moved toward me. “Are you okay? Did he stop by to hurt you?”
My chest squeezed at the worry in his voice. Even here, in enemy territory, his first thought was my
safety.
“No, no. I just took a shower. No one came in, though I heard a guard was placed outside my door.”
Kane grunted, glancing toward the main door before looking back at me. “Good. Here,” he said, fishing my phone out of his pants pocket. “It doesn’t have a good signal but with the customizations Damien did to it, it should work fine. Sorry, I should’ve brought this earlier.”
“It’s fine,” I said, taking the phone from his hands and immediately flopping down on my stomach
on the bed.
I pulled up the group chat my mother had insisted on creating for this mission. She’d named it’ Wolf Baddies Rescue Mission’ which was both embarrassing and oddly endearing. All the alphas were included. Finn, Elonso, London, and Dad. Mom was there too, along with Dash representing our advance team, and me. No one spoke against Mom being there, of course. The only people who could have successfully argued with her about being included in the group chat were currently locked up somewhere in this castle.

I started typing a quick report of everything that had happened since we’d arrived. Kane settled down next to me on the bed, close enough that I could feel the heat radiating from his body as he
looked over my shoulder and chimed in with details I’d missed.
“Some guards bowed to me when I arrived,” he said quietly. “I didn’t think Kellan would make them
do that.”
“Why not?”
“Because bowing to me acknowledges that I’m still the rightful king. If he’s planning a coup, he’d want to diminish my authority, not reinforce it.”
Good point. I typed that into my message.
“I didn’t know that woman from before,” Kane added.
“Who? Your girlfriend?” The words slipped out before I could stop them, and I immediately wanted
to take them back.
“What?” He shook his head, looking down at me with confusion. “What are you talking about?”
“She looked too cozy touching you. Seems a silly old curse won’t be enough to deter her. You liked
her touch?”
The question came out more bitter than I’d intended, and I cursed myself for letting my jealousy show. This wasn’t the time or place for this conversation.
Kane’s expression shifted to amusement, a smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. “Are you jealous, love?”
I rolled my eyes, trying to sound convincing when I said, “What? No, o-of course not.”
“Really?” He reached out and lifted my chin with his hand, forcing me to meet his gaze.
“Kane…”
