.Chapter 31-1
Simone
The woman leading us through the castle was getting on my last nerve, and we’d only been
walking for five minutes.
Lania moved with the kind of confidence that screamed trouble, and she was walking way too
close to Kane for my comfort.
“The castle has changed quite a bit since you’ve been away, Your Majesty,” she purred, her fingers trailing along his arm through his shirt sleeve.
I watched Kane jerk away from her touch, his face twisting in disgust. “Don’t touch me,” he snarled.
Any normal person would have backed off at that tone. Lania just laughed, a tinkling sound that
made my teeth ache.
“Oh, of course,” she said, moving closer again. “How deliciously mysterious.”
Was this woman completely insane? Did she not know about his curse? Or did she just not care about potentially dying from skin contact? Either way, she was really testing my self-control. My wolf was bristling with jealousy, and I was fighting the urge to shift and show this bitch exactly what happened to people who touched my mate.
Lania kept up her flirtation the entire walk, commenting on how strong Kane looked, how commanding his presence was, how much she’d missed having a real king in the castle. Every word made me want to punch her in her perfect face.
“These are yours,” she finally said, stopping in front of a door and sneering at me. “Close to the prince’s chambers.”
“Lucky me,” I muttered, shooting daggers at her back as I stepped inside the room.
It was nice enough, I supposed. Better than a dungeon cell, which was probably what I deserved for being a “prisoner.” The bed was made with expensive linens, there was a small sitting area, and best of all, there was an attached bathroom. I’d been dreading having to ask for basic necessities.
But Lania wasn’t done with her performance yet.
“Kane!” she whined, turning her attention back to him with renewed vigor. “Kellan is sleeping in your old rooms. I could show you another… somewhere close to mine, perhaps?”
She smiled in a way that made me want to vomit. The suggestion in her voice was crystal clear, and my hands clenched into fists at my sides.

Clau
“I’m sure spending so much time with this… savage,” she continued, glancing at me with obvious disdain, “is making you miss the company of a real lycan.”
Savage? Oh, this bitch was about to find out exactly how savage I could be. But before I could do
anything stupid that would blow our cover, Kane stepped in.
“No,” he growled, his voice carrying that commanding edge that made alphas think twice. “I’ll be staying down the hall. You’re dismissed, Lania.”
The woman actually had the audacity to pout, pushing her breasts up in her dress and leaning forward so Kane would have a perfect view down her cleavage.
I had to give him credit though. He didn’t even glance down. His eyes stayed fixed on her face, and his expression was nothing but cold dismissal.
“But I was looking forward to meeting the infamous king…” she tried again.
“As you said, I am the king,” Kane’s voice dropped to a dangerous rumble. “And I just ordered you to
go.”
The dominance radiating from him was enough to make my knees weak, and I wasn’t even the target of it. Lania’s lycan finally seemed to recognize what she was dealing with, because she dropped her gaze and took a step back.
“Y-Yes, my king,” she said, offering a quick curtsy before hurrying back down the hallway.
Kane watched until she was out of sight, then turned to me with that regal expression he’d been wearing since we entered the castle.
“Goodbye, Simone,” he said formally, as if someone might still be listening.
He nodded once and walked into the room next to mine, leaving me standing there with my heart racing and my wolf practically howling with satisfaction. The way he’d dismissed that woman, the complete lack of interest he’d shown in her obvious advances, the protective way he’d positioned himself between us…
