.Chapter 36-1

Simone

The blade stopped an inch inside my chest, and I had to bite the inside of my cheek to keep from reacting. The pain was manageable, I’d had worse training injuries, but the real challenge was staying completely still while listening to the chaos around me.

“Seize him!” Kellan grunted again, followed by the sound of a body hitting the ground.

I could hear Kane struggling, probably being held down by multiple guards. The sound of his pain made my chest ache worse than the blade currently lodged in it.

“Look at you, so weak after a woman,” Kellan’s voice was filled with disgust.

“I’ll do it. I’ll give you the crown, Kellan. I’ll disappear again. Just let her go,” Kane’s voice sounded desperate, broken. My own heart broke for him.

It was so difficult to keep my eyes closed and my face expressionless. A knife to the chest? I could manage that. But hearing my mate pleading for my life? That was my weakness. Every instinct I had was screaming at me to open my eyes, to tell him I was okay, to stop the anguish I could hear

in his voice.

“See how simple it was, father?” Kellan’s voice grated on my nerves, but I shut him out.

I focused on my mind’s eye instead, letting my null abilities spread outward across the castle. The tendrils of my power flew through the corridors, hovering over every tangled ball of magic that made up the minds of the people Kellan controlled. I started with the guards in this room, but I didn’t disrupt their control yet. I needed more time, needed to reach further than just this castle.

So I kept quiet, kept my eyes closed, and kept listening while my power spread.

“I guess there are people that matter to you. I’m…i’m just not one of them,” Kellan said, his voice

bitter.

“You don’t understand-” Kane started.

“No, I get it though!” Kellan interrupted with a snort. “You don’t know how surprised I was when Lania told me my father had saved his ex-fiancé’s life… and after that, the surprises kept coming, didn’t they? Fated mates, who would’ve thought!”

Kellan laughed, the sound cold and mocking. “I heard it’s far more common for wolves than it is for lycans to find their fated mates. I guess you got lucky.”

“What?” Dash whispered next to me, and I almost let a grimace slip.

Chapter 36 1

I should have talked to my brother about this sooner. The poor guy was finding out his sister had a fated mate in the middle of a hostage situation.

“Sorry, dude. They kept it from you too?” Kellan walked closer, his footsteps echoing in the suddenly quiet room. “Oh, shit. That means there’s even more surprising news I can break to you.” My blood ran cold. What else could he possibly know? There was no way he’d figured out about- “Congratulations, everyone!” I could hear the shitty smirk on Kellan’s face. “You’re going to be a father, Dad. Well, for the second time. Try to be a better one this time, won’t you? You don’t want to repeat every mistake you made with me.”

He let out a breathy laugh while the rest of the room fell into dead silence. My heart was pounding so hard I was sure everyone could hear it.

“I guess having a null as a mate did come in handy. You were able to breed her damn fast. I get you, though. Simone looks so delicious.”

Kane’s snarl echoed around the room, the walls nearly trembling as he growled, “Don’t fucking speak about her. Keep my mate’s name out of your fucking mouth!”

“And what are you going to do?!” Kellan mocked him. “Give up your crown now. Out loud, come on. Or she dies, along with your tiny, unborn baby.”

The knife in my chest pushed a little deeper, and it took everything I had to keep quiet. Blood was seeping through my shirt now, warm and sticky against my skin. But my magic was holding firm. The tendrils were wrapped around every single person Kellan had under his control, and I’d managed to reach almost everyone in the castle.
