“This IOU has your worthless son’s signature and thumbprint right on it,” the leader said. “Even if the police show up, a debt is a debt. You pay us back, and we leave. You try to stiff us, and we’ll see you in court.”
Robert panicked. This couldn’t be happening now. Someone had to be setting him up.
He scrambled toward Ethan, pointing a shaking finger in his face. “It’s you! You’re doing this because you don’t want me to be CEO! You hired these people to frame me, didn’t you? How heartless can you be? You’d bring in these thugs to lie just to ruin me. I really underestimated you. I guess since we don’t have the same mother, you’re fine with destroying my life.”
He wasn’t going to admit he lost that money. As long as he kept lying, they couldn’t prove anything, or so he thought. He had Rosaline to protect him; she always cleaned up his messes.
Ethan didn’t even have a chance to process the accusation before Rosaline slapped him hard across the face.
“You backstabbing snake!” she screamed. “You’d actually hire people to frame your own brother just to avoid signing that contract? I raised you, and this is how you repay me? Do you have a conscience at all? I don’t care how many actors you hire or what tricks you play! You are signing that agreement today.”
She could see Robert was acting guilty, but it didn’t change her mind. She would pull him aside later and tell him to get his act together, but she refused to let him be humiliated in public. It made him look bad, which made her look bad.
While everyone focused on Rosaline, Simon watched with a complicated expression. He knew that even with their mother’s help, Robert’s chances of running the company were dead.
“Actors?” The scarred man let out a loud, mocking laugh. “Rosaline, are you blind? I’ve got the debt right here in black and white, and you’re talking about actors? Robert’s two months are up. I came for my money, and it has nothing to do with anyone else. Stop blaming other people and answer me: are you paying the thirty million or not?”
He didn’t have time for family drama. He just wanted his cash.
Robert’s confidence vanished. He tried to hide his fear, but his voice cracked. “You’re lying! I already paid you ten million! Why do I still owe thirty? This is extortion! I’ll sue you and make sure you rot in prison!”
The words were barely out of his mouth before he realized he’d just confessed. The room went silent as everyone stared at him.

“Glad you admitted it,” the man said. He picked up the IOU and pointed to a specific clause. “Look closely. This is a high-interest loan. The interest builds every day, and the contract is perfectly legal. Sue me all you want, but you’re paying. If I don’t get the money today, I’m filing a lawsuit tomorrow. I’ll make sure everyone sees exactly what kind of person you are.”
Caught in his own lie, Robert broke into a cold sweat and ducked behind Rosaline.
“I… I don’t have the money,” he stammered, pointing at Ethan. “If you want money, go to my brother! He’s the CEO of Sand Corp! He’s loaded! He was just about to hand the company over to me anyway. Go talk to him, leave me alone!”
He figured since they weren’t blood, his mother wouldn’t care if Ethan took the hit. He’d spent his whole life shifting the blame onto Ethan, and the loser never fought back.
Terrance looked at Robert in total disgust. “What are you talking about? You went out and gambled the money away, and now you want Ethan to pay for it? Listen to yourself! Mom has spoiled you so much that you think you can just pin every mistake you make on Ethan.”
Terrance knew the truth. Their mother acted nice to Ethan on the surface, but he’d seen her lock Ethan in dark rooms and starve him as a punishment for years. It turned his stomach.
