Within the Sand family. Terrance was the only one who truly looked out for Ethan. He was the only person who cared whether Ethan was even still breathing.
“I’m fine.” Ethan wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, his gaze fixed on the floor to mask the bitterness.
Robert tilted his head back, a sharp, mocking laugh escaping his lips. T’m the one who hit him. So what? You going to stand up for this outsider. Terrance?”
Terrance looked at Robert, stunned. “He’s family. How could you beat him like this?”
Terrance never understood it. They were all Sand brothers, yet the family babied Robert while Ethan, the eldest, never received a scrap of affection. It wasn’t until he accidentally overheard his parents talking that he found out why
Ethan wasn’t Rosaline’s son. He was the child of their father’s first wife. His mother had died on the operating table giving birth to him, and his father had resented him for it ever since. Everyone had been shocked when the old man’s will put Ethan in charge of the company; they’d all assumed the position would go to Simon since Robert was too young to handle it.
Robert snorted. “He’s just the family errand boy, and when the help doesn’t listen to Mom, they get handled. He earned it. Mom told him to sign the transfer papers and he refused, so I dealt with him. What’s the problem? He’s been in that CEO chair so long he actually thinks
the place.”
To Robert, it didn’t matter that Ethan was the oldest. He was still going to hand over the company. Robert already had a plan: once he was in charge, he’d make Simon do the actu work while he just sat back and waited for the checks to clear.
Ethan’s phone started ringing. He checked the ID and picked up.
“Ethan,” Sam said, his voice tight with concern. “I heard Rosaline is forcing you out to put Robert in charge. Is that true?”
Ethan looked sharply at Robert. “How do you know about that?”
This was a private family meeting. No one should have known, but Sam already had the details. Robert must have leaked it.
Sam sighed on the other end. “Your brother leaked it online to pressure you. If Robert takes over, I’m pulling out of every deal we have with Sand Corp. We only worked with you because of Natalie. Let me tell you, if Robert takes the lead, the company is dead in a week.”
Ethan stood there for a long time before he could regain his composure. “Thanks for the heads

He hung up and opened Twitter. The news about the leadership change was already trending. Someone had paid for bots to keep it at the top. This mother and son duo had planned the entire ambush.
They’d probably been eyeing his job for years. Since he wasn’t Rosaline’s biological son, she didn’t care what happened to him. Everything had changed after Dawson died. Rosaline had stopped pretending to be civil and started coming for his family at every turn.
He’d been an idiot to think she’d ever actually care about him. It was all a fantasy.
Robert lost his patience and pointed a finger at Ethan. “Hey! Are you a statue? Get over here. Are you trying to piss me off? I don’t care how much you stall, you’re signing those papers today whether you like it or not.”
To Robert, Ethan was just someone the family tolerated out of obligation. Now that he was close to getting the company, he didn’t feel the need to hide his contempt anymore.
Ethan started to say something, but Terrance grabbed his arm. “Don’t fight them. You won’t win. You’ll just get more of the same.”
Right then, a voice boomed from the door. “Robert! When are you going to pay the casino what you owe?”
Everyone turned toward the entrance. A group of men in black suits burst in, looking for a fight. The leader had a scar across his face that made him look like a nightmare, and the guys behind him were carrying clubs.
Robert turned white and hid behind Rosaline, looking like he was about to piss himself. He hadn’t expected them to show up now and ruin his payday.
Rosaline stood up and glared at them. “This is a private home. You’re breaking the law. I’m calling the police!”
The man with the scar tossed a piece of paper on the table and smirked. “Your kid has owed us thirty million for two months. We’ve been nice enough to wait this long. Pay up.”
