I kept running even after my lungs burned like fire and my bare feet felt raw and bloody from the gravel.

II had no idea where I was going, I just knew it was away from the packhouse, from Damien, from the wolf shit, from the explosions still echoing in my head.

Tears streamed down my face, mixing with sweat, dripping off my chin.

. I wiped them with the back of my hand, smearing dirt and mascara.

“Fuck this,” I gasped between breaths. “Fuck all of it. I can’t… I can’t do this anymore.”

My legs shook so bad I almost tripped over my own feet.

The road turned into dirt path, then nothing but trees and darkness.

I didn’t stop I kept pushing despite my thighs screaming and my chest heaving. “Just keep moving, someone’s going to find me. A car, a house, anything.”

But nothing came, miles blurred. My feet hit rocks, roots, sticks.

Pain shot up my calves every step. I sobbed louder, not even trying to be quiet

anymore. “Why me? Why the fuck did this happen to me? I just wanted normal, a baby and a life.”

I stumbled, knee slamming into the ground. I caught myself on my hands, palms scraping dirt.

I pushed to my feet again, wobbling. “I can’t go back.

The path disappeared into thick woods. I pushed through branches, leaves slapping my face, arms up to shield my eyes. My dress caught on thorns, ripping louder. I yanked it free, cursing. “This is so stupid. I’m going to die out here, barefoot, pregnant and in a ripped dress, great plan, genius.”

My legs finally gave out. I collapsed against a rock wall, sliding down until my butt hit cold dirt.

A cave mouth was behind me. I crawled inside a few feet, back against the stone, knees pulled to my chest.

“Okay,” I panted, wiping snot on my sleeve. “Okay. Just… stop here. Wait till morning, daylight. I can see where I’m going, find a road and flag someone down. Get help from the police, hospital, anything.”

I hugged my knees tighter, rocking a little. “They won’t find me tonight, it’s too dark and too far.”

Id just tell someone i had been kidnapped or something and they would believe me, they have to.

My breathing slowed a little, chest still aching.”

I curled up tighter against the cave wall, dirt cold on my skin. Eyes heavy. “Please let morning come fast,” I whispered. “Please.”

Exhaustion hit like a truck. My head dropped to my knees. Sleep pulled me under, tears still drying on my cheeks.

*

I was fast asleep, curled up tight against the cave wall, knees to chest, when a low grunt yanked me awake.

My eyes snapped open. Heart slammed so hard I felt it in my throat. I stayed dead still, barely breathing, listening.

The grunt came again. Closer. Something moved outside the cave mouth, slow steps scraping dirt.

Panic flooded me. I pressed my back harder into the rock, hands shaking, nails digging into my palms. “Please no,” I whispered so quiet it barely came out. “Please don’t be them.”

The sound got louder. Heavy breathing. Then a shape stepped into the faint moonlight at the entrance. Small, brown fur, it was a wolf. It was tuny compared to Damien’s, ribs showing, fur matted and patchy, foam dripped from its mouth, eyes wild.

I froze. My voice came out trembling. “Are you… are you a werewolf?”

The wolf’s head tilted. It took one step in, paws silent on stone.

“Don’t harm me,” I begged, voice cracking. “I’m your Luna. Damien’s Luna. Please, I’m pregnant., don’t hurt me.”

It snarled low, lips pulling back over yellow teeth, the foam bubbled more. It looked sick, starved and something just was not right.

“Maybe you’re just a regular wolf,” I said fast, scooting back inch by inch. “Just… go away, please.”

The wolf lunged.

I immediately screamed and scrambled up, bolting out the side of the cave mouth.

Branches slapped my face, roots caught my feet. I ran blind, lungs burning, tears streaming. “No no no no!”

It chased. Paws thumping behind me. Growls close. I stumbled over a log, knees hitting dirt hard. I pushed up, sobbing. “Help! Somebody!”

The wolf lunged again, jaws snapping inches from my ankle. I screamed and twisted, pumping my legs harder. My dress caught in its teeth, my fabric yanked tight, ripping loud.

The pull jerked me backward, almost off my feet.

“No!” I shrieked, twisting my hips. “Let go!”

I grabbed the hem with both hands and yanked hard.

The wolf’s head jerked, growling deep in its throat.

Teeth tore through the material with a sharp rip, freeing me. A chunk of the skirt flapped loose, hanging by threads.

I stumbled forward, catching myself on a tree trunk. Splinters dug into my palm. I didn’ t stop. “Get away from me!” I yelled over my shoulder, voice cracking.

The wolf shook its head, foam flying from its mouth, then charged again. I sprinted, lungs on fire, bare feet pounding dirt and roots.

Tears blurred everything. Branches whipped my arms, stinging red lines across my

skin.

My legs gave out again. I fell face-first, dirt in my mouth. I rolled onto my back, hands up like that would stop it. “Please stop! I can’t run anymore!”

The wolf skidded to a halt a few feet away. It whined, sad and broken, head low. Foam dripped onto the ground. It wasn’t looking at me anymore. Its eyes were fixed behind

I turned slow, trembling so bad my teeth chattered.

A huge black wolf stood there, massive.

Fur sleek and dark, eyes glowing grey in the moonlight. It stepped forward slow, low growl rumbling from its chest.

The brown wolf whined louder, backing up, tail tucked.

I stared. My breath caught. “Damien?”

The black wolf’s head tilted, ears flicking forward. It looked exactly like him. The same

size, the same way he moved, the same eyes.

“Damien!” I screamed in relief and realization.
