I sat on the bed and raked my fingers through my hair, staring at the floor. Damien walked in and crossed his arms. “It’s time for nightly inspection. This time you come with me.”

I furrowed my eyebrows and looked up at him. “Me? Why?”

He shifted on his feet. “I want to be by your side in case something like this happens again. You nod and say okay?”

I nodded slow. “Okay. I’ll come.”

We walked downstairs together. The packhouse felt quiet. Guards nodded at Damien as we headed to the main hall. The other alphas were already there. Elias leaned against the wall. Rafe paced a little. Theo sat on a chair. Alice stood in the middle. Kade was by the door. Everyone looked angry. Faces tight. No smiles.

Damien started the inspection. “Borders first. Scouts report.”

Elias stepped forward. “North clear. East had a false alarm.”

Rafe nodded. “South same. No movement.”

I shifted on my feet and crossed my arms. They barely looked at me. Eyes flicked away fast when I tried to meet them.

Theo spoke up. “West scouts found tracks but old. Rogues probably.”

Damien nodded. “Double patrols tomorrow.”

Alice furrowed her eyebrows and stepped closer. “Hold up. I can’t believe I’m just going to ignore the big elephant in the room. Like why are we not investigating this already? This makes no sense Damien. She’s your Luna so you’re going to be biased. The elders are supposed to investigate the situation no matter what.”

The room went quiet. I felt my stomach drop. I raked my fingers through my hair and looked at Damien.

He furrowed his eyebrows. “What are you talking about?”

Alice crossed her arms. “Linda. The stabbing. We can’t just brush it off. Sienna’s story doesn’t add up. Blackout? Twelve hours gone? Sounds convenient.”

Rafe nodded slow. “She’s right. We need answers.”

Elias raked his fingers through his hair. “Yeah. Linda’s our beta. We can’t let this slide.”

Kade stepped forward. “Elders would sort it fast.”

I shifted on my feet. “I didn’t do it. I swear.”

Alice looked at me. Then prove it. Let the elders investigate.”

Damien’s face went red. He clenched his fists. Fur started pushing through his skin on his arms. His clothes ripped at the seams. He grew taller, towering over everyone. His voice blended deep with his wolf’s growl. “I am Alpha and this is my judgment. She will stay with me I’m still thinking about it and until I decide, shut it and this is my judgment. If you’re not okay with it then leave this pack right now? You are not going to stay with my alliance if you’re not going to respect my decisions.”

Alice stepped back quick. “What? You’re kicking us out?”

Damien growled louder. “If you don’t respect me, yes. My word is final.”

Rafe raised his hands. “Alpha calm down. We respect you. But this is serious.”

Elias nodded. “Yeah. We just want the truth.”

Kade looked at Damien. “Elders aren’t a bad idea. Neutral.”

Damien’s fur receded a little but he stayed tall. “No elders. I handle my pack. My Luna. If you have a problem.

leave now.”

Alice uncrossed her arms. “Fine. We stay. But if something else happens…”

Damien stared at her hard. “It won’t.”

The tension hung thick. I shifted on my feet and looked down. They all glanced at me suspicious. Damien grabbed my wrist. “Inspection over. Everyone out.”

They filed out slow. Rafe looked back at me once. Elias raked his fingers through his hair again. Kade didn’t say anything. Alice left last, shaking her head.

Once alone Damien let go of my wrist. “You okay?”

I nodded but tears pricked my eyes. “They hate me now.”

He shrugged. “They’ll get over it.”

I raked my fingers through my hair. “I hope so.”

I walked down the hallway toward the infirmary, shifting on my feet with every step. My hands shook a little as I raked my fingers through my hair. Damien had told me to rest but I couldn’t. I needed to see Linda. Apologize. Make sure she was okay. The door was cracked open. I pushed it wider and stepped in.

Linda sat up in bed, pillows propped behind her. She looked up fast when she saw me. Her eyes went wide. She scooted back against the headboard. “Stay away from me.”

I froze in the doorway and furrowed my eyebrows. “Linda? It’s me. I mean no harm. I just want to talk.”

She shook her head quick. “No. Please just leave. I’ve never seen anything so horrible in my entire life. I’m traumatized.”

I stepped closer slow, hands up. “I’m so sorry. I don’t remember any of it. I blacked out. I would never hurt you on purpose. You’re my friend.”

Linda pulled the blanket up higher. “Friend? You stabbed me. You smiled while you did it. Said I should have thought twice about coming with you. How can I forget that?”

I raked my fingers through my hair again. “I didn’t mean it. Something happened to me. I woke up and you were like that. Please believe me.”

She looked away. “I want to but that look in your eyes… it wasn’t you. Or maybe it was. Just go. Please.”

I took another step toward the bed. “Let me apologize properly. I need you to know…”

A vase on the shelf next to the bed wobbled suddenly. It tipped over fast and crashed onto the floor inches from Linda’s side. Shards flew everywhere. She screamed and jerked back.

“Get out!” she yelled. “Leave! Now!”

I backed up quick, hands over my mouth. “I’m sorry. Oh my god. I didn’t touch it.”

“Out!” she screamed again. “Go!”

I turned and ran out the door, slamming it behind me. Tears streamed down my face. I leaned against the wall in the hallway and slid down to the floor. My chest hurt bad. I raked my fingers through my hair hard and sobbed quiet. She hated me now. My only friend. And that vase… how did that happen? I didn’t do anything. But she thought I did.
