I woke up before the sun even started coming up. The room was still dark, just a faint glow slipping through the window. Damien was asleep on his side of the bed, breathing slow and steady like nothing in the world was wrong. I pushed myself up slowly and dragged a hand through my messy hair. My eyes felt swollen, and my chest felt tight, like I hadn’t really rested at all.

I couldn’t stay here. Not when it felt like everyone hated me. Not after what Linda said. I needed to do something. Anything that made me useful. Something that kept me out of the way. I slipped out of bed quietly and reached for my hoodie hanging over the chair, pulling it over my head and zipping it up to my chin. My sneakers were by the door, and I slid into them carefully, trying not to make a sound.

The packhouse was silent. I moved down the stairs slowly, stepping over the third step so it wouldn’t creak. The main hall was empty. I turned toward the back corridor where the library sat tucked away and pushed the door open gently. The smell hit me straight away, old paper and dust. I closed the door behind me and switched on a small lamp. The light barely touched the shelves.

I walked along slowly, brushing my fingers across the spines. Most of them were old, leather covers, strange symbols. I pulled one out and flipped it open. History of the Storm Blood Pack. I shoved it back. Another. Werewolf anatomy. No. Pack laws. Still nothing.

I let out a quiet breath and dragged my hand through my hair. I needed something about curses. About the moon goddess. About why someone like me even being here was a problem. My eyes moved across the shelves again until I spotted a thicker book with silver writing on the spine. The Moon Goddess and Her Blessings.

I pulled it out and carried it to the small table, dropping into the chair. It creaked under me. I opened the book and leaned forward, scanning the pages. The first chapter talked about fated mates, how the goddess pairs wolves for life, how breaking that bond is rare and painful. I flipped through faster, searching. Nothing about humans. My fingers tightened in my hair. “Come on…”

Then I saw it. Offenses Against the Goddess.

My heart picked up. I leaned closer, reading properly this time. It talked about angering the goddess and the kind of punishments that could fall on a pack. Rejecting a mate. Forcing a bond. And then…

“…bringing in a mate who wasn’t wolf.”

I stilled, my finger pressing into the page as I read the next line slowly.

“A human mate disrupts the sacred balance. The goddess may withdraw her favor, leading to weakened bonds, failed litters, or direct punishment on the pack.”

My throat tightened. “Punishment on the pack…”

I shut the book and pushed it away, my chair scraping as I stood up. I paced between the shelves, shaking my head. “This is why everything’s going wrong.” My voice came out quiet. “It’s me.”

I dragged my hand through my hair again, gripping it this time. “The blackout. The stabbing. The pup in my hands…” My breathing picked up. “It’s not random. The goddess is angry. She’s punishing them because I’m

here.”

I dropped back into the chair and stared at the book. “I have to tell him.”

My eyes burned and I wiped them quickly. “Even if he hates me for it.”

I pulled my sleeves over my hands and pushed myself up again, grabbing the book and holding it close to my chest. I walked to the window and looked out. The sky was starting to lighten. Soon everyone would be up. 1 wasn’t ready to face them.

“I’ll tell Damien today,” I whispered, dragging a hand through my hair. “No more hiding.”

I set the book down, then turned and headed straight into the halls. I checked the kitchen first. Empty. I moved to the main hall. “Damien?” My voice echoed slightly.

No answer.

I went upstairs to our room and pushed the door open. The bed was made. He wasn’t there. My chest tightened. I needed to find him.

I went back down and stepped into the infirmary. Linda was lying in bed, and the healer sat beside her reading. My steps slowed for a second. I braced myself, expecting Linda to look at me the same way she did before, cold, like I didn’t belong here.

But she didn’t even look at me.

The healer lifted her head instead. “Luna? You okay?”

I frowned slightly. “Have you seen Damien?”

She shook her head. “Not since this morning.”

I nodded and turned away, my hands feeling unsteady. I stepped outside. The training court was empty. A few guards were patrolling the borders, but no Damien.

“Hey,” I called, walking closer. “Have you seen the alpha?”

The guard shook his head. “Not recently, Luna.”

I swallowed and kept moving. The field tents were quiet. I checked a couple, pushing the flaps open. Nothing. My stomach twisted. “Where is he…”

I turned back toward the library and pushed the door open again. Still empty. I sat down for a second and pressed my hands to my face. “If this is real… they’re all in danger because of me.”

I stood up and stepped back into the hall. Voices carried from a nearby room. Low. Tense. I froze.

Damien.

And Alice.

I moved closer slowly, stopping by the cracked door. I couldn’t make out the words, just the tone. Sharp. Angry. Damien’s voice rose, and Alice snapped back. They were arguing. I leaned in slightly.

Then Damien stepped forward. His hands grabbed her arms. Alice said something, and he shook her. She pushed against his chest.

The next thing I knew, their lips were connected in a kiss
