My eyes fluttered open and the first thing I felt was pain shooting through my shoulder and side.

I was back in our bedroom, lying on the bed with blankets pulled up to my waist.

Damien sat right next to me, his shirt still ripped from the fight and his hair all messed up like he had been running his hands through it nonstop.

He had a damp cloth in one hand and was gently wiping blood off my arm. His other hand rested on my leg, thumb rubbing slow circles like he was trying to keep me calm.

“Hey,” he said quietly when he saw me looking at him. “You’re awake, how do you feel?”

I winced as I tried to sit up a little.

My head throbbed where the stone had hit me. “It hurts everywhere. What happened? Is the baby okay?” The words came out before I could even think.

My hand went straight to my stomach and I pressed it there, heart racing.

I was surprised at how fast that question popped out, like the pup was the only thing that mattered right now.

I had spent weeks feeling trapped by this pregnancy and now I was panicking over whether it was safe. “Tell me it’s fine, Damien, please.”

He set the cloth down on the nightstand and covered my hand with his bigger one, holding it against my belly. “The pup is okay. I checked, strong heartbeat, rogues came in big numbers but they didn’t get close enough to touch you after I pulled you out. They hit hard, then just… left on their own, they turned around and ran like they got what they wanted.”

I stared at him, trying to process it, “what was all that about? They attacked the packhouse, Damien. It wasn’t just a warning this time.”

He looked at me with furrowed eyebrows, his jaw was tight, “the borders were locked down tight, there were fuards everywhere. No one should have gotten through without help but they did, there were no scent trails leading in from outside, no broken fences, nothing. It’s like they walked right past every defense we set up.” He raked his fingers through his hair and let out a breath. “Someone on the inside let them in, has to be.”

My stomach dropped. I felt shocked, like the words hit me harder than the rock to my head. “Inside? Like… one of our own? After everything that’s happened with Linda and the accusations, now this? Who would do that?”

Damien shook his head. “I don’t know yet but I’m going to find out. I’m leaving guards right outside this door. They are two of my best so you won’t be alone for a second while I’m gone.”

I grabbed his wrist before he could stand up. “Don’t go, i’m scared, Damien. Every time I close my eyes I keep seeing those rogues jumping on me, their teeth, their claws, all of them screaming human Luna. I don’t want to sleep, I can’t.”

He didn’t pull away. Instead he leaned closer, his grey eyes locked on mine. His free hand came up slow and

brushed the hair off my forehead, fingers lingering there. “You need to rest, the wound on your head is still bleeding a little.” His voice dropped lower, softer than I had ever heard it, let me heal it.”

I swallowed hard, watching him. “How?”

“Alpha blood can heal his Luna,” he said, eyes never leaving mine, “or the woman carrying part of him, it’s not just for anyone, it’s for you.”

He bit the inside of his wrist quick, just enough to draw blood, then pressed it gently to the cut on my head.

His other hand cupped the side of my face, thumb stroking my cheek while the warmth spread through my

skin.

It felt intimate, like we were the only two people in the whole world right then.

His touch was careful, almost tender, and I leaned into it without thinking. The pain started fading almost right away.

“Does it hurt?” he asked in a quiet tone.

“No,” I whispered, “It feels… nice and warm, keep doing that.”

He nodded once and stayed right there, holding me like that for another minute. “You’re safe with me. I’ve got you.” His fingers kept brushing my hair back, slow and steady, while the healing worked.

I felt my body relax a little even though my mind was still spinning.

After a bit he pulled his wrist away and wiped the last of the blood off my forehead with his thumb, “better?”

“Yeah, thank you.” I looked up at him, still holding his other hand, “you have to go investigate now?”

“The minute you close your eyes,” he said. “guards are already outside and I’ll be back as soon as I can so just rest.”

I nodded even though my stomach twisted at the idea, “okay, be careful.”

He squeezed my hand once, then stood up.

I watched him walk to the door. The second the door clicked shut behind him, I tried to settle back against the pillows.

My eyes felt heavy but every little sound made me jump.

I kept seeing flashes of the rogues in my head, their voices yelling, the pain. Sleep came anyway, pulling me

under fast.

A loud thud woke me up. My eyes flew open and my heart slammed against my ribs.

The room was dark except for the small lamp on the nightstand.

Noise came from the corner near the window, like someone shifting furniture.

I sat up fast, wincing at the leftover ache in my side. PTSD or whatever this was hit me hard.

My breathing went short and I started shaking, “who’s there?” I called out, voice cracking. “Damien? Is that you?”

There was no answer, it was just another soft scrape of boots on the floor.

I scrambled back against the headboard, pulling the blanket up, “guards? Somebody say something!”

A shadow moved closer and then Kade was right there, hovering over the bed, his scarred face inches from

mine.

His hand came down fast and pressed hard over my mouth, muffling the scream that tried to rip out of me.
