My eyes snapped open and the hallway was gone. I was standing in some weird misty clearing, trees twisting all around me like I had stepped into another world. Rogues circled me on all sides, their eyes glowing yellow. teeth bared. There were at least ten of them, fur matted and claws scraping the dirt.
“Human Luna!” one of them snarled loud.
“Fake human Luna!” another shouted right after.
I spun in a circle, my stomach dropping. “What the hell? Where am I? Get away from me!”
They stepped closer, growling. “You don’t belong here,” a third one barked. “You’re the weak one carrying the alpha’s pup. Human trash.”
My hands shook as I backed up. “Stop it! I don’t know what you want from me! Just leave me alone!”
“Kill the human Luna!” they all started chanting together. “Kill her! Kill her!”
I screamed and covered my head. “No! Please! I have a pup! Damien, where are you? Somebody help!”
They didn’t wait. All of them pounced at once. Claws ripped into my arms and legs. Teeth sank into my shoulder. I hit the ground hard, screaming as pain exploded everywhere. “Get off! Stop! I didn’t do anything!”
One of them laughed right in my ear while he clawed at my stomach. “You think you can be our Luna? You’re nothing but a human whore!”
I thrashed and kicked, but more piled on. “Damien! Help me! I can’t breathe!”
Their voices mixed into one big roar of “Human Luna! Human Luna!” while they tore at me. I kept screaming, my throat raw, not sure what I was supposed to say or do to make them stop. Blood ran down my side and everything hurt so bad I thought I was done.
Then my eyes cracked open again, just a little. Everything was blurry. I was back in the hallway rubble, dust everywhere. Voices yelled my name, but they sounded different now. The growls turned into real words.
“Sienna!” someone shouted.
“Sienna, hold on!”
The voice changed, deep and sharp. “Sienna!”
I blinked hard, trying to focus. Damien smashed through the pile of stones and broken beams like they were nothing. His black shirt was ripped open at the chest, showing all those hard muscles and the dark tattoos that ran across his shoulders. Sweat glistened on his skin, his black hair messy and falling into his grey eyes. He grabbed a huge chunk of concrete with both hands, veins popping in his arms, and hurled it aside. His jaw was set tight, eyes locked on me like nothing else existed. God, he looked so strong and pissed and hot right then, breathing hard, moving like he could tear the whole packhouse apart if it meant getting to me.
“Sienna, I’m here,” he called out, voice rough. “Don’t move. I’ve got you.”

He kicked the last beam out of the way and dropped to his knees beside me. His hands slid under my back and legs, careful but firm. “You’re bleeding. Talk to me. Can you hear me?”
I tried to nod but everything spun. “Damien… they called me human Luna… they attacked me…”
He lifted me up against his chest like I weighed nothing.
His skin was warm and solid, heart hammering under my cheek. I leaned into him, pressing my face into the crook of his neck, breathing in that familiar scent that always made me feel safe even when he was being cold.
“I’ve got you,” he said again, quieter this time. “You’re safe now.”
My eyes started to slip shut. I held onto his shirt with weak fingers, feeling his arms tighten around me, before everything went black again.
