I saw his face change right in front of me.

The features melted and shifted. Bones cracked softly. The man standing there now had different eyes, different jaw, completely different face. I froze. My breath caught in my throat. My fingers went numb around nothing, just hanging there in the air, and my knees locked so hard it hurt.

Then I smelled something weird. Sweet and chemical, thick in the air. My head started spinning. The room tilted. I tried to step back but my legs gave out. My shoulder knocked the bar on the way down, glass clinking somewhere beside me while voices turned sharp and distant.

Everything went black.

When I opened my eyes again I was in a dark bedroom. The walls were concrete. No windows. A single dim bulb hung from the ceiling. I sat up fast, head pounding. My wrists were free but my ankles were tied with rope. I looked around, confused. My mouth felt dry. My hair was stuck to my face and neck, and when I pushed it back my hand was shaking.

Then it all came flooding back. The car. The fake Damien. Running. The guy grabbing me. The face change. My stomach twisted so hard I pressed a hand against it and sucked in a breath through my teeth.

I scrambled to my feet, ankles still bound, and hopped to the door. I banged on it hard with my fists. “Help! Somebody help me! Let me out!” My palms stung almost right away, but I hit it again anyway, harder, like if I just made enough noise somebody would have to hear me.

No answer. I kept banging. “Hello? Anyone? Please!” My voice came out high and thin, already starting to break.

Nothing. I hit the door again, harder. “Damien! Damien, where are you?” I leaned my forehead against the metal for one second, breathing hard, then pounded on it again with both fists.

My voice cracked. I slid down the door and sat on the floor. Tears burned my eyes. I raked my fingers through my hair, pulling hard. “This can’t be happening. This can’t be happening.” My chest kept jerking with every breath, and I dug my nails into my scalp like pain might wake me up.

The door suddenly opened.

I backed away fast on my butt. The same guy stepped in. He looked calm, like nothing was wrong. I stared at his shoes first, then dragged my eyes up to his face, and that made my heart start hammering all over again.

“Why are you disturbing everybody?” he asked.

I stared at him, heart racing. “Who are you? Let me go! Who are you people?” I pushed myself back until my shoulders hit the bed frame, fingers gripping the edge behind me.

He didn’t answer. He just walked over and set a tray of food on the floor next to me. Rice, some chicken, a bottle of water. The smell hit me and made me feel sick instead of hungry.

“Eat,” he said.

I kicked the tray hard. Food scattered all over the floor. Rice flew everywhere. The water bottle rolled away. My leg shook after it, rope scraping against my skin.

He raised his hands in defeat. “That’s up to you if you want to starve or not.”

I tried to run for the door. He grabbed me around the waist and pulled me back easily. I kicked and screamed. “Let go of me! Let me go!” I clawed at his arm and twisted so hard my hair whipped across my face.

He dragged me back into the room and shut the door. I kept fighting, hitting his arms. “Stop! Please stop!” My fists landed uselessly against him, and that only made me panic more.

He let me go. I dropped to the floor and curled up, crying into my hands. “I just want to go home. I just want Damien.” The words came out wet and broken, and I folded in on myself tighter.

He left without saying anything.

I sat there for a long time, sobbing. When the tears finally stopped I stood up and looked around the room. I checked the walls, the floor, under the bed. Nothing. No loose pipes, no hidden tools, no way out. I gave up and sat back down, hugging my knees. Every few seconds I looked at the door again, listening so hard my ears started ringing.

After a while the door opened again. The same guy came back in. I pushed myself back on instinct, heels dragging across the floor.

I backed away fast. “Stay away from me.”

He grabbed my arm and pulled me to my feet. I tried to yank away but he was too strong. His fingers bit into my skin and I hissed through my teeth.

“Where are you taking me?” I asked, voice shaking.

He dragged me out of the room and down the hallway. “To my leader.” I stumbled beside him, trying to keep my balance while the rope at my ankles made every step clumsy.

I kept asking questions. “Who is your leader? What do you people want? Why are you doing this to me? Let me go!” My words started running into each other, fast and desperate.

He didn’t answer. The hallway was dark and creepy. The lights flickered. Everything smelled weird, like old metal and something sweet and rotten at the same time. I couldn’t figure out what it was but it made my stomach turn. The air felt damp against my skin, and every open doorway we passed looked darker than the last.

He dragged me into another room and dropped me to the floor recklessly. I hit the ground hard, elbow scraping concrete. Pain shot up my arm and I sucked in a sharp breath, pushing myself up on one hand.

He stood over me and smiled.

“I’ve missed you, Sienna.”

I looked up.
