I sat on the bed staring at the door until my eyes burned. Sounds made my shoulders jerk. Every time I heard footsteps outside, I pushed myself up like maybe this was the moment Damien would come for me.

But it never happened.

The door stayed shut.

I dragged both hands through my hair and got up. “Think, Sienna. Think.” My voice shook. I started pacing, my arms wrapped around myself. “There has to be a way out.”

I checked the walls again. I pressed my palms over the concrete, then crouched and touched the floor, then stood on the bed and reached up to the corners. Nothing. No crack. No vent. No weak point. I jumped down and kicked the bedframe hard.

“Fuck.”

Pain shot through my foot and I grabbed the mattress. “Great. Good job, idiot.”

The lock clicked.

I spun around.

Kade stepped inside carrying another tray. Bread, water, something that smelled like meat. He shut the door with his foot and looked at me leaning over the bed.

“You’re still fighting the room?” he asked.

I straightened up and wiped my hands on my jeans. “I’d rather fight the room than look at your face.”

He set the tray on the table. “You should eat.”

“I should stab you.”

His eyes lifted to mine. “With what?”

I looked around the room, then glared back at him. “Give me five minutes.”

He slipped one hand into his pocket. “You’re funny.”

“I’m not trying to be.”

“No,” he said, looking me over, “you’re trying to be brave.”

My jaw tightened. “I am brave.”

He took two slow steps closer. “You’re trembling.”

“That’s because you kidnapped me, you psycho.”

He stopped by the table and folded his arms. “I told you already, I’m not going to hurt you.”

I let out a sharp laugh. “Do you hear yourself? You dragged me out of the packhouse, locked me in this room, and now you want me to relax because you said that?”

His face stayed calm. That made me angrier.

“Take me back,” I snapped. “Right now.”

“No.”

I stared at him. “No?”

“No.”

I walked toward him and jabbed a finger at his chest. “Damien is going to kill you.”

His eyes dropped to my hand, then lifted back to my face. “You say his name a lot.”

“Because he’s my mate.”

His mouth twitched. “Is that what this is about?”

I shoved his chest. He barely moved. “That is exactly what this is about.”

He caught my wrist before I could pull back. I tried to yank free, but his grip tightened.

“Let go of me.”

“You talk about him like he’s a god.”

“He’s more man than you’ll ever be.”

Something cold flashed across his face. He stepped closer, still holding my wrist. “Careful.”

I lifted my chin. “Or what?”

He stared at me for a long second, then let go. “Eat.”

I rubbed my wrist and backed away. “I’m not your pet.”

“I know.”

“Then stop acting like you own me.”

His eyes dragged over my face. “Not yet.”

My stomach turned. “You’re sick.”

He pointed at the tray. “Eat, Sienna.”

“No.”

“Eat.”

“I said no.”

He sighed. “If you faint, I’ll have to force food into you.”

I froze. “Don’t touch me.”

“Then eat.”

I looked at the tray, then at him, then shoved it off the table. The plate smashed across the floor. Water spilled everywhere.

His eyes followed the mess. “You keep doing that.”

“You keep bringing it.”

Then he crouched, picked up the unbroken bottle, and set it back on the table.

“You’re stubborn,” he said.

“And you’re delusional.”

He stood up again. “You’ll break eventually.”

“No, I won’t.”

“Yes, you will.”

I laughed in his face. “You really do not know me.”

He stepped closer. “I know enough.”

“No, you know nothing.” I jabbed my finger toward the door. “I hate this room. I hate your voice. I hate your face. I hate every second I have to breathe the same air as you.”

His jaw ticked.

I saw it and pushed harder. “And when Damien finds me, I’m going to stand there and watch while he rips you apart.”

His hand shot out and gripped my jaw.

I sucked in a breath and clawed at his wrist. “Get off me.”

His face lowered close to mine. “You think he’s coming.”

“He is.”

“You think he can save you.”

“He will.”

He stared into my face, then gave a small nod. “We’ll see.”

He let me go so suddenly that I stumbled back. I rubbed my jaw hard, glaring at him.

“You’re disgusting.”

He walked to the door.

I followed him. “Coward. Untie the door and fight someone your own size.”

He looked over his shoulder. “Rest while you can.”

“I hope you choke.”

He opened the door.

I ran for it.

I shoved past him, barefoot on the cold floor outside. I did not even look where I was going. I just ran.

“Sienna.”

His hand caught the back of my shirt.

I screamed and twisted, but he dragged me back so fast my feet slid out from under me. I hit the floor on my knees with a cry and he hauled me up again.

“Let me go! Let me go!”

I kicked backward, thrashed, clawed at his arm. He cursed under his breath and pulled me against his chest, one arm locked around my waist.

“Stop fighting me.”

“Go to hell!”

I turned my head and bit his hand.

He swore and jerked back. I ripped free for one second, stumbled forward, and screamed with everything in

“Damien!”

Silence hit the hallway.

Then, faintly, somewhere far away, I heard it.

“Sienna!”

My whole body went still. My lips parted. I turned my head toward the sound, my chest heaving.

No.

No way.

My eyes widened and I grabbed Kade’s arm without meaning to, my voice shaking.

“Did you hear that?”

Kade’s grip tightened.

And then I heard it again.

My knees nearly gave out.

“Damien?”
