Chapter 249
He scratched the back of his neck, lowering his eyes to the desk. “No, not sick. I haven’t been sleeping well lately.”
I gave him a pointed look. Well, that makes two of us then, I thought.
Olivia rounded the desk and smiled. “Well, don’t worry. I’ll make sure that you’re taken care of,” she hummed.
We watched her leave, forcing the two of us to face the tension that clung to the air alone. I turned back to continue my fake search for a notebook. Kane sounded as though he moved closer.
“Well, I guess it’s not here,” I said nonchalantly. I turned back around and I found him leaning against his
desk with his arms folded over his chest.
“Evelyn, we need to talk,” he said evenly.
“Yes, I believe we do.”
He gestured for me to sit down in one of the chairs. I did so graciously.
“A lot has gone unspoken since the night of the full moon,” he started.
I held up a hand, stopping him from going any further. “I really don’t feel like reminiscing about that night,” I said. “It happened, alright? I’m not okay with it, but there’s clearly nothing that can be done, so I think it would be best to move on.”
His look was imploring. “You need to know that nothing happened.”
I tore my eyes away from him and failed to ignore the burning in the back of my throat. Of course, I was skeptical of him. How could I not be?
“You don’t believe me. Even now, you still don’t?”
“Why should I? It’s not as though anything has happened in which my opinion on the matter should have miraculously changed,” I pointed out.
Did he seriously think that me staying away from him was going to magically make me move past what had happened?
“Because I’m telling you the truth. As your husband, that should mean something.”
“Yeah, it might have at some point,” I said. I gently shook my head. “But things are different now.”
Kane drew closer. “They’re hardly different.”
My brows pulled together. I scowled. “I’m really beginning to doubt your intelligence. Yes, Kane. Things are exceedingly different now. You allowed your goddamn ex-fiancé to move into this pack without a single question or hesitation.”

His mouth fell into a thin line as he remained quiet.

“You allow her to have access to you at any given point. I understand that the two of you have a deep history, I do. But I am no longer going to accept being made to feel like a second choice. You don’t get to put me on the back burner whenever that woman cries out for her.”
He clenched his jaw and lowered himself to kneel at my feet. “You are not a second choice, Evelyn.” Kane reached out to tuck a lock of my hair behind my ear.
He was so close I could feel his heat. But I was instantly struck by a floral scent that permeated my senses. My nose wrinkled in disgust as I instantly flinched from him.
“My Gods, you reek of her!” I sneered.
Olivia returned with a mug in her hand. “Here you are. This should help.”
Kane took it without a thought as I blinked back the tears in my eyes.
“Thank you,” he said dully.
“Think of me as your personal assistant around here,” Olivia cooed.
I rolled my eyes and scoffed. “If that’s the case, then someone should tell Henri that he’s been replaced. I’ll happily take him with me when I leave.”
Within seconds, Kane smashed the mug that was in his hands. “What the fuck are you talking about?!”
