Chapter 248
Evelyn’s POV
The days that followed my encounter with Kane were more painful than I was anticipating. Both mentally and physically.
After I had spoken to Kane regarding the strange activity in the restricted section of the medical ward, he and I had gone back to not speaking to each other.
It was as though he and I had entered into a silent war.
He went about his own business in his office, while I continued my work down in the lab. We’d catch a glimpse of each other only during meals, but a word is never spoken.
The nights were the hardest. I still refused to share a bed with the man, much less a room, but lying there in my makeshift bed in the lab was not the solution to our problems.
I think Kane and I both knew that the two of us really needed to sit down and attempt to have a real conversation. He needed to know what I was planning to do with my mother’s estate.
That morning, I woke up with a pain in my neck and an ache in my chest. I longed for the mornings when Kane and I would wake up in each other’s arms. We’d take out time getting ready and promise to check on each other throughout the day.
Now, we’d become strangers who were merely locked in a legal agreement once again.
It hurt.
It reminded me of the time before the battle when my wolf was suffering from the frayed bond with Kane. I had never felt more ill in my life than when the two of us were trying to ignore each other.
I feared that given my current situation, I was at risk of hurting myself even more due to both of our stubbornness. And although I wasn’t suddenly okay with how he handled things with Olivia, the least I could try to do was mend the bond with him and my wolf. 1
The alpha that was developing with me kept claiming that such a connection was unnecessary. But the other half of my wolf was desperate to keep some connection to Kane.
Me? I felt like I was being torn into several different directions. Independency? Codependency? Resentment? Desperation? At the rate things were going, I was facing a high chance of losing my sanity.
Something needed to change and quickly.
I put what I was working on off to the side for the moment and headed to the upper levels of the house. Knowing Kane, he was likely still in his office.
Just as I got there, I opened the door to find him sitting behind his desk while Olivia was standing behind him with her hands on his shoulder.

“Evelyn?” Kane’s eyes grew wide as though I caught him in the act of a crime.
Seeing them in such a way sent fire through my veins, but I kept my expression cooled.
“Sorry to interrupt whatever this is,” I muttered with a raised brow. “I merely came for my notebook. I
can’t seem to find it.”
Kane’s tone sounded weary. “You weren’t interrupting anything.”
I ignored the pair of them and went about searching for a notebook that I knew wasn’t actually there. I felt Kane’s eyes boring into the back of my head. But I didn’t dare turn around to face him. Not when my cheeks were inflamed with burning embarrassment.
I shouldn’t have come here, I thought.
‘She shouldn’t be here either,’ my wolf snapped.
“Kane, why don’t I get you some more tea?” Olivia asked softly. “I don’t think that massage helped much.”
Kane took a long moment to respond. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed he was still staring in my
direction.
“I…Uh, yeah. I guess,” he mumbled.
I turned to glance over my shoulder at him. “I didn’t know you drank tea,” I noted. “Are you getting sick?”
