I walked down the hallway rubbing my eyes from the bad sleep. My head felt heavy. I needed to find Linda. She always made sense of things when Damien didn’t. I heard voices coming from the small meeting room at the end of the hall. Low and serious. I raked my fingers through my hair and pushed the door open quiet.

Linda and Alice sat at the table with maps spread out. Linda pointed at a spot on the paper. “We hit their north border first. Cut off supplies before they regroup.”

Alice nodded and leaned back in her chair. “Yeah. But we need scouts on the east side too. They’ll try to flank us.”

They both looked up when I walked in. Linda smiled quick. “Sienna. Hey. Come join us.” Alice leaned forward and gave a small wave. “Morning. You look tired. Rough night?” I shifted on my feet and crossed my arms. “Something like that. What are you guys talking about?”

Linda waved me over to a chair. “War plans. Sit. We’re figuring out the next strike.”

I sat down and looked at the map. “Sounds serious.”

Alice smirked and sniffed the air once. “You smell like sex.

I furrowed my eyebrows and felt my face heat up. I raked my fingers through my hair. ” What?”

Linda laughed a little. “Alice, come on.”

Alice shrugged and leaned back. “What? It’s true. After that show last night I’d be surprised if it ended in anything else. You put on a performance girl. Had everyone staring.”

I shifted in my chair. My stomach twisted. “It was just a dance.”

Alice grinned wider. “A dance? Honey that was a full stripper routine. Damien must have loved it. He’s such a lover boy. I just know he takes care of you after something like that.”

I stared at her. My hands clenched under the table. “What do you mean lover boy?”

Alice waved her hand. “You know. The way he gets. All possessive and attentive. He used to do the same with me. Back when we were mates. He’d mark me up for hours. Bet he did the same to you last night. That’s why you smell like him everywhere.” Linda looked between us. “Alice maybe tone it down.”

Alice laughed. “What? It’s true. He’s good at it. Sienna you’re lucky. He knows how to make a girl feel wanted. Even if it’s just for the night.”

I felt my chest tighten. Tears picked

I felt my chest tighten. Tears pricked my eyes. I stood up fast and the chair scraped the floor loud. “I’m out.”

Linda reached for my arm. “Sienna wait.”

I yanked away and raked my fingers through my hair hard. “No. I’m done.”

Alice furrowed her eyebrows. “What’s wrong? It was a compliment.”

I stormed to the door. “Nothing’s wrong, enjoy your plans.”

I slammed the door behind me and walked fast down the hall. My face burned.

My hands shook. I crossed my arms tight over my chest and kept going.

Alice’s words kept repeating in my head.

So he was a lover boy ?! I didn’t think he had it in him with how disgusted he seemed

all the time.

I stormed down the hallway, my feet slapping the floor hard. My face still burned from what Alice said. I raked my fingers through my hair and turned a corner, trying to get as far from that room as possible. My chest felt tight like I couldn’t breathe right. I leaned against the wall for a second and closed my eyes.

Footsteps approached from behind. I flinched and jerked away from the wall, heart jumping in my throat. I turned fast.

Alice stood there, arms loose at her sides. She tilted her head a little. “Hey.”

I shifted on my feet and crossed my arms. “What do you want?”

She stepped closer. I backed up a step but she grabbed my wrist gentle but firm. “Wait. Don’t walk away. I’m sorry.”

I furrowed my eyebrows and tried to pull free. “Sorry for what?”

Alice let go but stayed close. “I didn’t mean to go too far back there. I just… I noticed you don’t like me much. And honestly I get it. I wouldn’t be here if things weren’t like this with the war and everything. But hey, you got nothing to worry about, you know? Once a bond is broken it’s broken forever and nothing can get it back.”

I stared at her, mouth open a little. “What?”

She shrugged and raked her fingers through her hair. “I failed to carry his heir. That’s why it ended. Seeing that you’re pregnant now, the problem must have been me. Not him.”

I felt my eyes widen. I shifted on my feet and uncrossed my arms. “Sorry to hear that. Really. That sounds rough.”

Alice waved her hand. “Nah. It gave me time to take over my father’s pack as alpha. I’ m stronger than ever now. Running my own thing. It worked out.”

I nodded slow, chest still tight but less angry now. “That’s… good I guess.”

She smiled small. “Yeah. And look, I won’t get in the way again. I promise. I’m here for the pack, not for old drama.”

I looked down at my feet. “Okay. Thanks for saying that.”

She squeezed my shoulder quick. “No problem. We’re on the same side.”

Damien walked up then, boots heavy on the floor. He stopped next to us and crossed his arms. “I need to talk to you.”

I furrowed my eyebrows and looked at Alice. She looked back at me. I started to walk away, thinking he meant her. My feet moved fast down the hall.

He grabbed my wrist and pulled me back. “I’m talking to you.”

I stopped and looked up at him, shocked. My heart raced again.
