We got back to the hotel late. Damien carried me the whole way up to our room.

He opened the door with one hand and set me down gently on the bed. I kicked off my shoes and crawled under the covers.

He took off his hoodie and jeans, then climbed in beside me. I turned toward him and he pulled me close, arm around my waist.

We didn’t say much. He just held me tight, his chin resting on top of my head. I listened to his heartbeat until I fell asleep. My fingers stayed curled in the front of his shirt the whole time.

I woke up the next morning and reached for him. The spot beside me was empty.

The sheets were cold. My heart jumped. I sat up fast, raking my fingers through my hair. “Damien?” My voice came out rough, and I turned so fast the blanket twisted around my legs.

The room was quiet and there was no answer. I looked around, panic starting to build in my chest.

He left. He went back to the packhouse without me. I knew it. He got tired of being here and just left. I stared at the closed door with my hand pressed against the mattress.

I pushed the covers off and stood up, breathing fast. “He wouldn’t do that, right? He said he wouldn’t leave me.” I pressed my palm to my chest and tried to breathe slower.

I walked to the bathroom, still half asleep, mind spinning. I splashed water on my face and stared at myself in the mirror. “What if something happened? What if he had to go back because of the war? I should have asked him last night. I should have” My wet fingers tightened on the sink, and water ran down my wrists.

The door clicked open.

I spun around. Damien walked in carrying two coffee cups. He looked at me, eyebrows raised a little. Steam curled up between his hands while I just stood there staring at him.

“Oh my God,” I said, putting my hand on my chest. “You scared me. I really thought you left me there for a second.” My knees went weak with relief, and I let out a breath through parted lips.

He set the coffees on the table. “Of course I would never leave you.” He said it like it was obvious.

I let out a shaky breath and walked over to him. “Are you okay?” I searched his face while I stopped in front of him.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” He handed me one of the coffees. “Got you one with extra cream.” His fingers brushed mine for a second when I took it.

I took it, still feeling my heart slow down. “Thank you.” I wrapped both hands around the cup and let the heat sink into my palms.

He sat on the edge of the bed and sipped his own. I stood there for a second, then sat next to him. The mattress dipped under my weight, and my shoulder brushed his arm.

“So… what do you want to do today?” I asked. I tucked one leg under me and looked over at him.

He looked at me. “I was thinking I could take you out. There’s a place in the human world I like to go when I visit.” He rested his forearms on his thighs.

I blinked. “Really? I didn’t know you had favorites. You always seem like you hate the human world.” I watched him over the rim of my cup.

He shrugged. “Some parts are okay.”

I smiled a little. “Let me get dressed first.” I set my coffee down and stood, smoothing my shirt with both hands.

I went to the bathroom and took a quick shower. The hot water felt good. I kept thinking about last night, about him saying he loved me.

My cheeks got warm again. I dried off, put on jeans and a soft sweater, and brushed my hair. When I came out he was waiting by the door. I slowed for a second when I saw him there.

“Ready?” he asked.

“Yeah.” I nodded and slipped past him, grabbing my bag from the chair.

We went down to the car. He started the engine and pulled out of the parking lot. I watched the road for a minute, then looked at him. My fingers played with the sleeve of my sweater.

“I’m starting to worry about the packhouse,” I said. “And you not being there. I know you want to be here with me, but I think it’s okay for you to go back now. Who knows what could happen.” I turned in my seat a little, studying the side of his face.

He kept his eyes on the road. “They don’t need me, they will be fine.” His hands stayed loose on the wheel.

I furrowed my eyebrows. “What?” My fingers stilled in my lap.

He glanced at me. “Oh yeah, you’re right.”

I stared at him. Something felt off, really off. My stomach twisted.

I raked my fingers through my hair and tried to keep my voice normal. “Oh Damien, I think I need to pee.” My throat felt dry when I said it.

He looked over. “Right now?”

“Yeah, right now.” I forced out a small laugh and shifted in my seat.

He sighed. “There’s no place to stop in the middle of the road. Should I just park the car?”

“Yes.” I answered too fast and turned to the window before he could look at me harder.

He pulled over on the side of the road. I unbuckled and got out fast. “I’ll just use the shop over there.” I pointed toward the small gas station with a hand that I hoped was not shaking.

I started walking toward the small gas station shop. My heart was beating fast. He got out and started walking behind me.

I sped up and he sped up too. I walked faster, almost jogging now. Gravel crunched under my shoes, and the back of my neck prickled harder with every step.

I know that is not Damien.
