I stared at him, my mouth slightly open. A little laugh slipped out before I could stop it. “Wait… you mind linked me?”

Damien’s face stayed serious. He was still on top of me, eyes locked on mine like he was trying to figure out if I was joking.

I raked my fingers through my hair, still amused and completely shocked. “I heard you loud and clear. Like you were standing right next to me.”

He shook his head slowly. “That’s impossible. Humans can’t hear mind links.” His jaw tightened.

I furrowed my eyebrows and sat up a little, pushing against his chest. “But I did. I heard you. And… I think I heard you that night at the hotel too. When we got separated. I was in the room panicking and I swear I heard your voice in my head saying you were coming for me.”

Damien’s eyes widened just a fraction. He sat back on his heels, running a hand over his face. “That shouldn’t be possible.”

I shrugged, still trying to wrap my head around it. “Well it happened. Twice now.” I pulled the blanket higher over my chest and glanced away.

He looked at me for a long second, then leaned down and kissed my forehead, soft and slow. “We’ll deal with it tomorrow morning. Right now you need to rest.”

I nodded and snuggled back against him. He pulled the blanket over us and wrapped his arm around me tight. I closed my eyes, my head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat until I fell asleep. His fingers stayed in my hair.

Morning came fast. I woke up to the smell of food. Linda was standing by the bed with a tray in her hands. She smiled when she saw me open my eyes. My hair was all over my face, and I pushed it back with one hand.

“Hey,” she said softly. “I’m sorry for all the nonsense you’ve been dealing with since you came here.”

I sat up and rubbed my eyes. “It’s not your fault.” My voice came out rough from sleep, and I pulled the blanket up around me.

She set the tray on the bedside table. It had pancakes, fruit, coffee, everything. Alice walked in right after her carrying another plate. She bumped the door shut with her hip.

“We thought you could use a nice meal,” Alice said. “A little get away from all the chaos.”

I smiled a little. “Thank you. Both of you.”

Linda sat on the edge of the bed. “Eat. You look like you haven’t had a proper meal in days.” She picked up the fork and handed it to me.

Alice dragged the chair closer and sat down backward on it, folding her arms over the back. “And before you say you’re fine, don’t. You have that ‘I’m fine’ face, and honestly, it’s not convincing.”

I looked at her and laughed under my breath. “I don’t have a face.”

“You do,” Linda said, pointing at me. “It’s very dramatic. Very sad puppy left in the rain.”

I pressed my lips together, trying not to smile too hard. “That’s so rude.”

“It’s honest,” Alice said, lifting one shoulder. “We are healing you with pancakes and honesty.”

I picked up the fork and took a bite of the pancakes. They were warm and sweet. I ate slowly, feeling a little more like myself. Linda watched me, then pushed the fruit bowl closer.

“Eat the strawberries too,” she said. “Damien will probably come in later acting like he hasn’t been pacing holes into the floor.”

Alice rolled her eyes. “He scared three guards this morning by just looking at them.”

I paused with the fork halfway to my mouth. “He did?”

“Girl, yes,” Alice said. “One poor guy dropped his clipboard. Damien didn’t even yell. He just looked at him. and the guy looked like he wanted to resign from life.”

Linda laughed and covered her mouth. “Don’t say it like that.”

“But it’s true,” Alice said. “All the alphas are acting weird. Elias keeps pretending he’s calm, but he has been rubbing his jaw every five seconds. Rafe has asked the same question about security three times.”

I took another bite and laughed a little. My chest still felt sore from everything, but laughing made it easier to breathe. “They’re stressed?”

“They’re very stressed,” Linda said. “But everyone is trying not to dump that on you.”

After a few minutes I looked up at them. “What happened with the pack after the protesting? What did they think?”

Linda and Alice exchanged a quick look. Alice stopped smiling first, and Linda placed her hands on her lap.

“Damien handled the situation,” Linda said. “He told everyone it was a misunderstanding. That someone was spreading rumors to cause trouble. He shut it down fast.”

Alice nodded. “The pack is calm now. No one’s talking about it anymore.”

I took another bite, thinking about everything. “Good. I don’t want them looking at me like that again.” My grip tightened around the fork, and I looked down at the plate.

Linda reached over and touched my knee through the blanket. “They shouldn’t have looked at you like that in the first place.”

Alice nodded, her face serious now. “You didn’t deserve any of that.”

I swallowed hard and gave a tiny nod because if I talked too much, I knew I might start crying again. Linda noticed, so she changed the subject fast.

“We kept extra syrup,” she said. “Because Alice says pancakes without too much syrup are basically bread.”

“They are,” Alice said. “Dry emotional bread.”

I laughed again, shaking my head. “You’re both weird.”

“Correct,” Alice said. “But you smiled, so clearly it’s working.”

We kept talking while I ate. Linda told me about some of the pups who had been asking about me. Alice joked about how the alphas were all acting like nervous teenagers after yesterday. I laughed a little, feeling lighter.

When I finished the food, Linda took the tray. “We’ll let you rest more if you want.”

I shook my head. “I’m okay.”

They both gave me quick hugs before leaving. The room went completely quiet again. I lay back down and stared at the ceiling, my hand resting on my belly. I still couldn’t believe everything that had happened.

The door opened suddenly.

I sat up fast, expecting Linda or Alice again.

Damien walked in. His face was tight, jaw clenched. He looked pissed.

Before I could even ask what was wrong, he let out a loud roar that shook the walls.
