Chapter 2 A Second Chance
Someone to build a quiet little life with. That would be more than enough.
The Volunteer’s eyes lit up.
She hammered away at the keyboard for a few seconds, then spun the monitor around to face me.
“Well, would you look at that? I’ve actually got someone perfect for you. Take a peek and tell me what you think.”

Before I even saw the photo, my eyes caught the title next to the name–Former Commander, Alliance Defense Corps. My eyes went wide. That was a former War God.
I waved my hands and shook my head frantically. “No. I just want someone normal, please.”
Adrian had already taught me exactly where I stood in the food chain. I wasn’t about to reach for the moon again.
“Relax. The former War God, Caleb Voss, was medically discharged due to injuries. His Psychic energy is unstable now, so he can’t soothe a regular Beastkin’s Heat turbulence. Despite everything he’s accomplished, no Beastkin has been willing to be adopted by him.
“But you’re different. You’re a rabbit–type Beastkin with a gentle temperament. Even during a Heat cycle, you won’t go berserk. Your Heat is purely a physical issue, and trust me, he’s more than equipped to handle that.”
The Volunteer shot me a knowing wink.
My cheeks flushed.
I was still hesitant. A man like that had to be proud on the inside, right? And after suffering that kind of setback, he probably wouldn’t be easy to live with.
She must have read the worry on my face, because she pulled out her secret weapon.
“Don’t say no just yet. How about you take a look at his photo first? I guarantee once you see it, you won’t be able to turn him down.”
That sounded suspiciously like a sales pitch.
1 chewed on my doubts and looked.
The man in the photo wore a military uniform. He had the build of a soldier, wide through the shoulders and lean at the waist, with arms that went on for days. His face was all hard edges, like someone had chiseled it out of marble, but his blue eyes told a completely different story, warm and gentle, the kind that could disarm you with a single look.
I held my breath. My heart started hammering out of control.
“Besides, the poor guy has no Beastkin willing to take him. His Psychic energy damage has made him really insecure. He’s desperate for a Beastkin who only has eyes for him.
“Oh, and he loves rabbits. His whole apartment is full of rabbit plushies.”
That was it. I couldn’t hold back anymore. I stammered, “R–really?”

“Well, of course! Trust me. You won’t be disappointed.”
“Then… then I’ll take him.”
“Done!”
The Volunteer beamed from ear to ear and had the Adoption agreement signed and sealed in two clicks.
She didn’t even give me time to change my mind.
My stomach twisted into an even tighter knot.
The process to dissolve my current Adoption would take a week.
The Volunteer told me I could move into Caleb’s place after that.

Adrian would probably be thrilled when he heard the news. No more eyesore cluttering up his space. He could finally be with the Beastkin he actually wanted.
t was nearly midnight. My phone sat silent with no new messages. I smiled bitterly at myself for still hoping, even now, that Adrian night actually worry about me. What a joke.
The Volunteer ruffled my hair and said, “It’s getting late. Why don’t you crash here for the night?.
It’s not safe for a gentle Beastkin like you to be out walking alone this late.”
t wasn’t like Adrian would care whether I came home or not. I thought about it for a moment and nodded.
Besides, I decided to make a welcome gift for my new partner.
The Volunteer had mentioned that Caleb loved little rabbits.
So I plucked some of my own fur and started needle–felting a cute little rabbit figure modeled after my Beastkin form.
got so absorbed in the work that I lost track of time.
was just putting the finishing touches on the rabbit when my phone rang, sharp and urgent,
Adrian’s voice came through the speaker, barely holding back his fury.
‘Isabelle, where the hell are you? I’m telling you right now, playing hard to get won’t work on me. Don’t think for a second that bulling this stunt is gonna make me fall for you,”
‘I wasn’t… Um, is there anything else? If not, I’m gonna hang up.” I kept my tone as polite and distant as I could.
