Chapter 6 One Hundred Percent
We were officially Bonded partners now. Did that mean we would…
But Caleb just ruffled my hair and said, “It’s fine. Let’s sleep in separate rooms for now.”

The memory hit me instantly. The first time I went into Heat, I had begged Adrian to help me through it, scared and desperate. He had shoved me away with a look of pure disgust and told me I reeked of poverty. That someone like me had some nerve trying to touch him.
Would Caleb feel the same way?
I curled my toes against the floor, spiraling into overthinking.
Caleb was already heading for the door when he suddenly stopped, turned back, and walked toward me with a serious look.
“You’re hiding something from me.”
My face stiffened. I denied it immediately. “No I’m not!”
He studied me for a long few seconds. A flicker of hurt crossed his face, and he looked away.
“I know I’m older, and my Psychic energy is a mess. You’re only with me because you feel sorry for me. I understand why you wouldn’t want to open up to me.”
A single tear slid down his cheek as he said it. He was breathtaking, even when he cried.
I panicked. I waved my hands frantically. “That’s not what I meant! I just…”
“Just what?”
Under the full force of those blue eyes, my defenses crumbled. I admitted defeat. “I just thought you didn’t like me. That’s why you said that.”
He looked at me in silence for a long time before he spoke. “Do you know what our Compatibility score is?”
I shook my head.
I had never asked the Volunteer. At the time, the simple fact that someone was willing to be with me felt like a miracle. I hadn’t dared to push my luck.
Caleb smiled softly. “One hundred percent. So from the moment I first laid eyes on you, falling in love with you was inevitable.”
He gazed down at me, his eyes holding nothing but my reflection. Only my reflection.
My brain short–circuited.
Out of nowhere, a dumb meme popped into my head. Me, “I breathe.” Him, “Then you’re my wife.”
My face turned scarlet and I stammered, “B–but a high Compatibility score doesn’t mean two people will actually like each other.”
Just like how I had liked Adrian, but Adrian had wanted nothing to do with me.

Something shifted in Caleb’s eyes, and his voice took on a deeper, more meaningful tone. “The matching system may not be perfect, but it has never been wrong. Sometimes, it’s the person who refuses to admit it.”
I didn’t fully understand what he meant. But the gist was clear. He genuinely liked me. The sudden confession caught me completely off guard. I had no idea how to respond, because no one had ever treated me this way before.
Something darkened in Caleb’s eyes, and he closed the distance between us. I instinctively backed away, my legs gave out, and I tumbled onto the couch. His solid frame followed me down, and he buried his face in the crook of my neck, his voice low and husky.
“Looks like my girl doesn’t believe me. Guess I’ll just have to prove it, huh, sweetheart?”
I had no words.
He tore through seven condoms before he was done with me.
The War God had earned his title. We started in daylight and didn’t stop until dark.
When I woke up, my brain was soup and my voice was completely wrecked. Caleb rubbed my lower back and coaxed me in a husky voice to go back to sleep.
But my phone rang. It was the police station.
The officer told me that Adrian had gotten drunk and picked a fight. My number was the only contact he had listed.
The hand resting on my waist tightened.
Every muscle in my body went rigid. I answered calmly. “Our Bond has already been dissolved. We have no connection to each other anymore. Please contact someone else.”
“He doesn’t have any other family. Would you mind coming down? We’re in a bit of a bind here.”
At the station, Adrian sat slumped in a chair, head hanging low, looking like a wreck.
The moment he saw me, he shot to his feet and started toward me. But Caleb stepped in front of me before Adrian could get close.
Caleb stared Adrian down, his voice cold as ice. “Stay away from my wife.”
Adrian’s face twisted with hostility. He glared right back at Caleb, but the second his eyes landed on the hickeys scattered across Caleb’s neck, he lost it.
“Isabelle, are you really that desperate?!”
