The cartilage in my nose shattered. The crunch was sickening Blood sprayed backward, hitting the dirtÂ
behind me.Â
I fell flat on my back. My head bounced against the frozen earth. I went completely blind for two seconds. The pain in my face was absolute. It radiated deep into my teeth and up into my skull I was suffocating on my own blood. It poured down the back of my throat, thick and metallic.Â
Taya dropped down on top of me. She pinned my arms to the ground with her heavy knees. She sat squarely on my chest with her massive ass, crushing my lungs.Â
She raised her right fist high into the cold air.Â
“This is an execution!”Â
The voice tore through the roaring crowd. It was Lord Torin.Â
I could barely hear him through the ringing in my ears. I turned my head slightly, spitting blood out of myÂ
mouth so I wouldn’t choke.Â
Torin stood at the edge of the ring. He was pointing a shaking finger at Fenris. My mother stood right behind Torin. She was gripping the sides of her head, screaming hysterically. Her eyes were wide with pure terror.Â
“Alpha Volkov, I demand you stop this match!” Torin yelled. He stepped closer to Fenris. “She is dying in the dirt! You are letting a Valdris princess be slaughtered!”Â
Fenris did not look at Torin. He kept his grey eyes locked entirely on me. He stood perfectly still, aÂ
massive statue of fur and leather.Â
“She is an Ironmaw mate,” Fenris said. His voice was flat. It easily cut through the noise of the yard. “She fights.”Â
“She is bleeding to death!” my mother shrieked. She tried to run into the ring, but two Ironmaw guards grabbed her arms immediately. They held her back. She kicked and sobbed. “Fenris, please! Stop it! I begÂ
you!”Â
Fenris slowly turned his head. He looked down at my mother. His face was devoid of any emotion.Â
“If you scream again, I will have you gagged,” Fenris said.Â
My mother gasped. She went completely limp in the guards’ arms, sobbing uncontrollably.Â
Torin took another step toward Fenris. “King Aldric will declare war over this. You are breaking the treaty right now.”Â
“I am honoring our laws,” Fenris said. He turned his attention back to the ring.Â

Taya sat on my chest. She looked down at me. She smiled, her chest heaving with exertion. Blood dripped from her knuckles onto my collarbone.Â
“Nobody is coming to save you,” Taya whispered. She pulled her fist back further. “Yield. Scream it so the whole pack hears you.”Â
I stared up at her. My left eye was completely swollen shut. My nose was a ruined mess. I could not breathe through it.Â
I closed my right eye.Â
I needed the healing. I needed it right now.Â
I tuned out the screaming crowd. I tuned out my mother’s sobbing. I reached deep into my center. I found the knot of heat sitting low in my stomach. I grabbed it with my mind. I forced the energy upward. I pushed it past my throat and flooded it directly into my shattered face.Â
The familiar, aggressive itch spread rapidly across my skin. The bone in my nose shifted with a loud, clicking sound. The cartilage knitted back together. The torn skin fused. The blinding pain dulled into a heavy, manageable throb.Â
It cost me immediately. A massive wave of deep exhaustion hit my muscles. My stomach cramped violently, hollowing out. I was burning my own fuel at a rapid rate. My limbs felt like they were filled with wet sand.Â
Yvara told me I had three uses before my body shut down. That was one.Â
