Chapter 124
“So stubborn,” his mother says fondly. “Always has been.”
I wonder if she realizes how familiar that word sounds to me now.
I glance at Dom, he glances at me, and we both look away.
Dessert arrives.
One bowl.
Two spoons.
They place it between us with unmistakable intent.
“Share,” his mother says lightly. “It builds closeness.”
My stomach knots.
Dominic doesn’t reach for his spoon. Neither do I.
“L… don’t think this is appropriate,” I say carefully.
His father chuckles. “You’re fated mates, Ellie. This is nothing.”
Nothing.
I’m telling you, it’s not.
Dominic’s knee shifts, barely brushing mine, and I pull back instinctively. The movement doesn’t go unnoticed.
Everything feels too hot all at once.
His mother tilts her head. “You’ll grow used to it.”
That’s when it sinks in.
This isn’t dinner.
It’s rehearsal.
“I… don’t think I will.” I say, fainting timid.
‘You’re young, you’ll understand in time.” His father nods. “Eat. Both of you.”
Dominic sits rigid beside me, jaw tight, eyes fixed forward like he’s bracing for impact.
Then our hands both reach for the same spoon. They touch, setting off a jump between us, a spark.
We both snap back as his parents giggle.
I hate it.
Dominic stands, quick. “Ellie needs to get home.” He says flat.
[ blink, confused. His parents eyeing me.
“Oh!” I stand so fast my chair squeaks. “Yes! I do! I need to study! Thank you, for um, tonight!”
I bow, “And sorry for the gala-”
Dominic takes my arm and starts pulling me to the door.
