His peel from me slow, then focus on Ellie. I can hear that smile in that ‘gentle’ voice he only uses with her.
I straighten and step away before anyone opens the door and catches me lurking like an idiot.

The next day, I see her in the hallway.

One hand presses to her temple as she walks. Her steps are careful, measured, like the floor might tilt if she moves too fast.

This is not fine.
I keep telling myself she’s with him. That if something was wrong, Lucas would say something. That she chose him and him her. That I’m not part of this anymore.
Still, I watch.
Because something doesn’t add up.
Ellie never really embraces him.
No fingers lacing through his. No casual lean into his shoulder unless she’s about to fall. No quiet smiles, no murmured jokes, no touches that linger.
Lucas doesn’t look like a boyfriend.
