Chapter 194
Dominic’s POV
Ellie’s footsteps echoed up the stairs, followed by the sound of a door slamming a few moments later. Marcus and I stood there in the middle of the sitting room, staring at the spot where she’d just been, then at each other.
I looked at the maid, who was still standing in the corner. Her eyes were wide, mouth hanging open. She couldn’t have been much older than eighteen.
“It’s okay,” I said. “You’re not attending any meetings.”
The maid let out a breath, curtsied, and scurried out of the room.
My Beta turned to me. “Sir, what’s going on with her?”
I passed a hand over my face. “A lot of things, Marcus. A lot of things.”
Marcus made a sound of agreement and left me alone with my thoughts after that.
I’d expected Ellie to still be mad at me after our disaster of a wedding day, but I had not expected her to shirk her Luna duties so openly. Even though she wasn’t happy with the wording of our contract, she’d still made a promise to do her due diligence.
Being here and attending her own meetings was part of that promise.
My mind instantly went back to the trauma she claimed to have endured. I was certain by now that it was real, and serious, and that yesterday had triggered something in her that was still making her act out.
My resolved hardened even more than it had last night, when I had woken up in a cold sweat from that awful dream.
Ellie loved me. Even now. I was sure of it.
I had to win her heart back.
She didn’t feel safe with me for some reason. Well, I was going to fix that, and maybe then she would tell me about her trauma, the way a husband and wife should be open with each other. Then, maybe, just maybe, things could find some semblance of
normalcy again.
Well. Not that “normal” was ever really in our vocabulary these days. But you get the point.
I slept fitfully again that night, but thankfully, when I did doze off, I didn’t have any more strange dreams. By the time I woke the next morning, the sun had begun to rise already, promising a warm, bright day.
I showered and dressed quickly, then headed downstairs. The kitchen staff was still off duty, but I wanted to prepare something myself, anyway.
After putting a pot of coffee on, I got to work. I grabbed the carton of eggs from the fridge, milk, bacon, and a loaf of slightly stale bread from the pantry. I whisked the eggs and milk together with a dash of cinnamon, then soaked the bread in the mixture and placed two slices in a hot pan with butter, and put the bacon in another pan.
While the French toast was cooking, I went outside to the garden and collected some fresh strawberries. For good measure, I snipped a single pink tulip, too. By the time I got back inside, the toast was ready to flip.
I plated everything carefully, making sure the presentation was just right. I even sprinkled a little powdered sugar on the French toast, warming the maple syrup before putting it in a little pitcher on the side. I arranged the strawberries and bacon to look like a smile, then placed the tulip in a tiny vase I’d found under the sink and poured a cup of extra sweet and creamy coffee, just the way she liked it.
Then, I headed upstairs.
If there was one thing I knew about Ellie, it was that she loved good breakfast food. Even if she was still pissed at me, I knew her

heart would soften just a little at the sight, and hey-maybe she would even speak to me today, for just a moment, rather than avoiding me at all costs.
