Chapter 217Â
Dominic’s POVÂ
I was sitting in my office, listening to the sound of the rain. It was a cold, gray day, the dark clouds promising a flood that would likely fast until tomorrow.Â
Oddly, I hadn’t seen Ellie at all that day.Â
But maybe that was because I wasn’t really looking for her.Â
Her recent mood swings were starting to grind on my nerves, as much as I hated to admit it having such an effect on me.Â
I didn’t want to blame her. I knew that the wording of the contract and my vows was confusing and easily taken the wrong way.Â
But, dammit, why couldn’t she just listen to me?Â
And why did I have to have Vivian fill in for her, when she promised to help me?Â
I was staring at the page in front of me as these thoughts swirled around in my head, not really paying attention to the words in front of me, when I heard the sound of a knock on the study door. It was soft and light, indicating that it wasn’t my Beta.Â
I perked up a little, wondering if it was Ellie, and called out, “Come in.”Â
The door creaked open. A moment later, it wasn’t Ellie who stepped into the room, but rather Vivian.Â
I tried not to look disappointed.Â
“Dominic,” she said, shutting the door behind her and coming to stand in front of my desk, her hands clasped in front of her. “I wanted to see if you ever had a chance to look over those seating charts for the festival banquet.”Â
“Oh. Right.” I pulled open the top drawer of my desk and pulled out the neat purple folder, which had been labeled, in glittery letters, “Seating Arrangements”.Â
I handed them to her, and she took them, flipping through and nodding at the notes and changes I had made. Since my pack was relatively small, it was of the utmost importance at these types of events that dignitaries, Alphas, and Lunas from other packs were seated appropriately-enemies seated apart, friends together but not too close, sprinkling acquaintances in here and there in order to facilitate new relationships.Â
And, of course, our own people woven throughout,Â
“You put our chief doctor at table B?” Vivian asked, looking up at me.Â
I nodded and clicked my pen, continuing to write on the page in front of me. “There’s a well-known professor at that table that I was hoping to have her meet. We were discussing the possibility of introducing a course at the university sponsored by the pack.”Â
“I see.” Vivian glanced at the paper. “I wasn’t aware of this.”Â

For a moment, I almost blurted out that that was because it was Ellie who was supposed to be in on such things, not her sister. But I restrained myself.Â
“Well, now you are,” I said, forcing a smile. “I hope the arrangements can be made.”Â
“Of course.” Vivian bowed her head respectfully-and turned to leave. I continued working on my paperwork, assuming that she would slip out without saying anything else.Â
But I didn’t hear the door open. And when I glanced up, Vivian was still standing there with her hand on the doorknob, her lips parted like she wanted to say something.Â
“Yes?” I asked, setting my pen down.Â
“I just wanted to let you know that I prepared all of your favorite foods,” she said, smiling. “We’ll test the menu out tonight before the festival, just in case anything isn’t up to par.”Â
My eyebrows shot up at that. I wasn’t sure how Vivian knew about my favorite foods-it wasn’t something that I talked about often, let alone to her. And I never asked for all of my favorites to be served at the festival banquet.Â
But the gesture was nice, and for a moment, it softened me.Â
“Thank you,” I said, nodding my head once. “That’s very kind of you, Vivian.”Â
She beamed at me, curtsied, then left.Â
I sat there for a moment after she was gone, staring at the spot where she’d been standing. As nice as the thought was, it made a wave of bitterness wash over me; because it really should have been Ellie who saidÂ
those words. Not Vivian.Â
Ellie was my wife. My Luna and my mate, and the woman I loved.Â
