Chapter 219

Ellie’s POV

My leg still hadn’t given out, surprisingly, by the time I found Dominic. I’d expected the pain to return once the adrenaline wore off, but I felt perfectly fine. Better than fine, actually. I felt like a million bucks, as if instead of simply repairing my bone, I had gotten an entirely new one in its place.

I heard Dominic’s voice before I saw him, which surprised me, because it meant that he had either noticed I was missing or had felt my tug on the bond after all-both equally unlikely.

He was standing at the edge of the forest, looking pale and wide-eyed. His eyes widened even further when he saw me approaching. His gaze moved to the boar, and he rushed over.

“How the hell…? Ellie, are you alright?”

I nodded, trying not to notice the way his shirt was completely sheer and clinging to his torso from the rain or that strange sense of relief I felt in my chest at the thought that he’d noticed I needed help and had clearly dropped everything to come after me. “Yeah. I’m fine.”

“You don’t look fine.” He grabbed my shoulders and tried turning me as if to inspect me for injuries, but I didn’t budge. “Is that your blood?” he asked, dropping his hands back to his sides.

Another nod. Dominic stared at me in confusion, but I just stared back, not really sure how to explain what had happened. How could one explain that, just minutes ago, their leg had been completely broken, and then some sixth sense had kicked in, and they had found a medicinal herb as if by a miracle, and now they were completely healed?

None of it made sense. Not to me, and it definitely wouldn’t to him. I decided to chalk it up to coincidence; perhaps I had seen the herb without really noticing it, and my healer studies had kicked in, and my subconscious had simply known that I needed to eat it to get better.

That was the only explanation I could think of.

Dominic looked over me one last time, then at the boar again, and shook his head. “Ellie, I can’t believe you went out hunting like this on your own.” He noticed the arrows sticking out of the boar’s throat. “Since when are you this good of a shot, anyway? I didn’t even know you knew how to hold a bow.”

My jaw tightened. Of course he didn’t. He didn’t know much of anything about me, and yet I had agreed to marry him like a fool.

“I’ve had training,” I said vaguely.

Dominic glanced down at me again. “When?”

I shrugged, refusing to answer. He stared at me for a moment, clearly frustrated that I was saying so little, but then sighed. I swore I saw the barest hint of a smile tugging at his lips.

“Well, I’m impressed,” he said. “My best hunters have been struggling to handle this boar.”

I refrained from mentioning the fact that if it weren’t for that herb, I might have failed, too.

A few minutes later, the warriors arrived and took the boar away to be cleaned and prepared. Dominic, refusing to leave my side for fear of some hidden injury that I wasn’t talking about, insisted on personally

escorting me to the infirmary.

I told him I was fine, but he wouldn’t have it any other way, so eventually, I caved and let him take me there. The healers looked me over thoroughly and found nothing other than old blood that was both mine and the

boars.

“You said your leg was broken?” the healer asked quietly. Dominic was waiting outside the infirmary, so it

was just us.

I nodded. “I found this plant with fuzzy leaves. I ate it and got better.” I furrowed my brow. “I still can’t really explain it.”
