Chapter 223

Dominic’s POV

I expected Ellie to be awake by the time I woke up the next morning. She always was up before me lately— usually so she could sneak out of the house before I even came downstairs for breakfast, and not to come

home until well after dinnertime.

But what I didn’t expect at all that morning was to find her sitting at the dining table, smiling, with several notebooks open in front of her and a stack of papers on her left hand side.

The moment I saw her there, I stopped in the doorway and rubbed my eyes, certain that I was still dreaming. When I opened them again, she was still sitting there. She looked up at me and her smile faded slightly, but not completely.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” she asked by way of greeting. She took a sip of her coffee, then licked her thumb and flipped to the next page in her notebook.

I shook my head and walked over to the table, taking a seat. As one of the servants brought me a plate of eggs, bacon, and toast, I took a moment to peer at whatever Ellie was working on..

She seemed to be sketching something. From the looks of it, it was some kind of layout for something.

“What are you working on?” I asked.

Ellie sighed softly like I had asked a stupid question and shut her notebooks, stacking them together. “I’m working on the festival preparations.”

I straightened at that. “You are?” I blurted out. “But I thought you weren’t interested in helping with that.”

“Yeah, well, I changed my mind.”

I stared at her, too stunned to speak. She left without another word, leaving me sitting there with my breakfast untouched.

It didn’t make sense. All this time, Ellie had been so adamant about not performing her Luna duties, and now here she was, up at the crack of dawn, working on festival prep. Just recently, she had outright told me that she didn’t care if Vivian took over for her. In fact, she almost seemed relieved by it. [

I thought back to last night and wondered if the incident with Vivian changed things. Maybe being scolded for her actions with that food list had given her a change of heart. Maybe it made her realize that she was truly being childish, and she decided to stop whatever game she was playing.

That was the only explanation I could think of for it, and it made me smile. Maybe, just maybe, Ellie would come around. Maybe whatever had happened to her after the wedding was finally reaching its end.

I had just popped a bite of eggs into my mouth, still smiling somewhat, when I heard the front door open. Heels clicked against the floor in a familiar rhythm, and a few moments later, Vivian appeared in the dining room doorway.

“Ah! Dominic,” she said, hurrying over to the table and plopping down a binder that was practically the size of my torso, complete with glittery letters on the front that read “Festival Prep”. “I was hoping to talk to you about the entertainment we’ll be offering at the festival. I know we talked about tug of war, but I was

thinking that a game of soccer would also be fun-‘

“Actually,” I cut her off, swallowing my eggs, “I think Ellie is taking over from now on.”

Vivian hovered halfway to her seat, the binder now open in front of her. Her face paled. “What? Really?”

I nodded and reached for my coffee. “I hope you know that I really do appreciate your work thus far. But Ellie seems to have come out of her funk and wants to work on the festival.”

“But I already put so much effort in…”

“I know you did. And you’ve done a great job.” I meant that, truly. “I’m sure Ellie would be happy to take you on as an assistant. We can still incorporate everything you’ve prepared.”

“An assistant.” She sat down the rest of the way and stared at me. You’re demoting me to assistant.”

“Well,” I said, taking a bite of my bacon next, “I wouldn’t say it’s a demotion. In fact, if you want to come on officially as her assistant, you could even be payrolled. It’s a prestigious position in any pack.”

I didn’t look at her right away, too busy buttering my toast, but I could feel Vivian’s eyes boring into the side of my skull. When I finally glanced up at her, I found that she was veritably shooting daggers at me, like I had just told her that she would be paid to wipe my ass for me.

“What?” I asked, going still. “You don’t look happy.”

“Well, how could I be?” Vivian huffed, throwing her hands up in the air. “I was doing just fine getting this festival ready on my own, and all Ellie did was try to sabe age me yesterday! And now, all of a sudden, you’re just taking her word when she says that she’s going to take everything over? And I just get to be the assistant?”

I stared at her. “It’s her job,” I said. “Besides, I know Ellie. She was going through something, and-”

“She’s a liar!” Vivian hissed, shooting to her feet. She slammed her palms hard enough against the table to make my coffee nearly slosh over the rim of my cup. I stared up at her in shock.

“She’s going to sabotage the entire festival,” Vivian went on, either not noticing the way I was looking at her or deliberately choosing to ignore it. “She’s only out for herself.”

Silence hung between us for a moment. I continued to stare at Vivian, caught between being taken aback by her insubordination and expecting it entirely. Ellie had warned me on multiple occasions that Vivian was not to be trusted. I knew that. But I didn’t expect her to actually say such horrible things about my wife right to my face.

Finally, finding my words, I carefully set the butter knife down and folded my hands on the table.

“Vivian,” I said slowly, calmly, “you should watch what you say.”

She visibly bristled. “She’s deceiving you,” she hissed, “and you’re falling for it. I won’t be lowered to an assistant, especially not for a woman who just wants the worst for all of us!”

“That’s not true.” The words came out quickly, but I meant each and every one with all my heart. Ellie was going through a lot right now, that much was certain, but I knew her better than anyone. And I knew that, despite everything, she didn’t intend to harm anyone. Especially not me or the pack.

I took a deep breath and calmed myself. “You know, I was going to leave the decision up to you, but now I think you need a bit of a reality check. You will take on duties as Ellie’s assistant in the festival preparations.”

“But-”

“Whether you like it or not, Vivian,” I interrupted her, “Ellie is the Luna for now.”

Vivian opened her mouth, eyes flashing with anger, But before she could speak, a floorboard creaked, and we both looked up to see Ellie standing in the doorway.
