Chapter 230

Ellie’s POV

Dominic’s mother was the last person I expected to step in. I especially didn’t expect her to stand up for me like this, out of nowhere, with absolutely no prompting whatsoever.

I was pretty certain the woman hated my guts.

Or so I had always assumed.

Before Dominic and I were engaged, she had made no attempts to hide her dislike for me. Neither in this life, nor the last one. Once we were engaged, she seemed to tolerate me, but only because I was going to be useful

for her son.

I studied her now, waiting for her to whirl on me next. It would make sense, given everything I knew about her, that she might scold us both. But she kept her gaze fixed on Vivian, her expression hard, and didn’t

look at me at all.

Vivian, for her part, had gone stiff. “Excuse me,” she started, “I don’t know what you think happened here, but-”

“I know exactly what happened here,” Dominic’s mother said. “I’ve been watching this festival for the past twenty minutes. I saw you give that boy the orders.”

Vivian’s mouth snapped shut.

“My daughter in law has spent the last several days putting this together.” Dominic’s mother gestured around at my side of the field without looking away from Vivian. “And you’ve spent that same time doing everything in your power to make sure it fails. I’ve seen enough.”

A moment of silence passed. Vivian opened her mouth again, but before she could speak, Dominic’s mother said, “That’ll be all, Vivian. Run along now, and let this be a lesson to you about disrespecting my son’s and daughter in law’s boundaries.”

Vivian stared at Dominic’s mother for a long moment, clearly taken aback. Then, she shot me a dirty look before turning on her heel and storming off with an audible hmph.

I stood there for a long moment, staring at the spot where Vivian had been before I turned to look at Dominic’s mother.

She was smiling at me.

“Don’t fret, dear. Bitches like that always get their comeuppance in the end.’

I blinked, not only surprised by everything else, but at the fact she’d just called Vivian a bitch. “I… Um… Thank you,” I said, not really sure what else to say. “For handling that.”

She waved her hand, then looked around at the festival. “It was the least I could do. You’ve done well, Ellie, and I’d hate to see your day ruined by her.”

That came as another surprise. Dominic’s mother simply never complimented me, and not so… genuinely.

“You did all of this yourself, didn’t you?” she asked. “The preparations and everything.”

“Mostly,” I said, watching her carefully, like one might watch a dog known for biting ankles.

Dominic’s mother looked at me for a long moment, then sighed softly. “I owe you an apology,” she said. “I wasn’t kind to you when I should have been. I made assumptions.”.

I didn’t know what to say to that, so I didn’t say anything at all. Although on the inside, I did think to myself: “Is this really happening right now?” I almost wanted to pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. I couldn’t even count how many times I had wished Dominic’s mother would accept me in my past life. Far too many times, that was for sure.

“You’re not who I thought you were,” she went on. “And I mean that in the best possible way.” She reached out and put her hand briefly over mine. “I’m proud of you. Genuinely.”

Her statement landed somewhere deep in my chest. I wanted to say something this time, but the words just

wouldn’t come.

“I want to see you and Dominic do well,” she said. “Not just because I’d like grandchildren someday, although I won’t pretend that isn’t part of it.” A faint smile touched her lips. “But because you deserve to be happy. Both of you. Together. As the Goddess intended.”

I looked at her. She looked back, steady and serious, and I believed her, which was the part that caught me off guard. I never expected to hear something so genuine and kind come out of her mouth.
