Chapter 238

The man shook his head. “Look, lady, I just planned to stab the guy. Kdon’t know nothin’ about toxics or whatever you just said.

“Toxins,” I corrected, pinching the bridge of my nose. My mind reeled. “Okay. So you didn’t coat the blade with poison? You’re not bullshitting me right now?”

“Why would I?” He shrugged, rattling his handcuffs a little with the movement. “I’m gonna go to jail anyway.”

I sighed, lowering my hand, and studied his face. Like Sera, he seemed genuinely confused. He really had no clue what I was talking about, which made no sense. In my past life, the blade had been coated with wolfsbane toxin. It was the toxin that killed me in the end, not the cut itself.

Unless…

The toxin hadn’t been applied after the stabbing, had it?

I shook my head, resolving to think more on that later.

“So,” I said, “let me ask again: who hired you?”

He looked at me for a moment, then sat back in his chair and pressed his lips together. I knew we were done.

“That’s all I’m getting, isn’t it?” I asked.

“I don’t know nothin’ else.”

I looked at him for another moment, then went to the door. The guard came in and took the man away. I took his knife for testing, just to be safe, carefully tucking it into a bag without touching it with my bare

hands.

Sera apologized four times in the span of about three minutes after the man was taken away. I assured her that I believed her, truly, although she kept apologizing and assuring me that none of this had anything to do with her.

“I will find out who hired him,” she said. “You have my word on that. And anything I find out, I will bring straight to you.”

“Thank you,” I said.

Lucas, standing beside me, gave her a small nod. “We appreciate you handling this so quickly.”

With that, we said our goodbyes and walked back out to Lucas’s car. The sky had gone fully dark by then, and I realized with a small jolt that I had been gone from the festival for hours. By the time we got back, it would be over.

I got in and stared straight ahead while Lucas started the car.

“So,” he said, pulling out onto the road. “You want to tell me how you recognized him?”

I had been waiting for this. “I’ve seen him before,” I said.

“Where?”

“A while ago. At an everit.”

Lucas was quiet for a moment. “What kind of event?”

“Lucas…”

“Hey, I drove you all the way out here. I think I have a right to ask.”

He did, to be fair. I looked out the window and watched as the trees whizzed past alongside the car. “Look, I just… I can’t explain the whole thing. It’s complicated.”

Lucas drummed his fingers on the steering wheel.

“I know how it sounds,” I said, sinking down a little in my seat. “But I just can’t give you more details than that.”

He sighed. “Fine,” he said. “Have it your way.” He shot me a look. “But are you in danger, Ellie? Can you at least tell me that much?”

“I don’t know if I’m in danger,” I said. That part, at least, was the truth.

He nodded slowly and didn’t ask anything else after that, although I could tell it bugged him. To his credit, though, he knew better than to keep pressing.

We drove the rest of the way mostly in silence.

By the time we pulled up to the house, the festival grounds were dark and the last of the cars were gone from the field. Lucas stopped at the end of the driveway and I got out, thanking him quietly. He waited until I was through the gate before pulling away.

The house was dark. I came around to the back, figuring I might be able to slip in through the kitchen door and deal with Dominic in the morning.

But I was wrong.

Dominic was sitting on the back steps. He had a bottle in one hand, his elbows on his knees, and he looked up when he heard me coming. His eyes found mine across the dark yard, and even from that distance I could see the anger in them like storms raging on the horizon. I froze.

He scoffed and took a swig from the bottle. “Gee, Ellie. Who knew changing a tampon could take eight fucking hours?”
