Chapter 248

Ellie’s POV

I woke up before my alarm went off the next morning:

That wasn’t terribly unusual anymore. A good night’s sleep felt like a distant memory at this point; my mind was always racing too much for proper dreams to fill the space. This morning was no different. I laid there for a moment staring at the ceiling, listening to the quiet of the house, and then got up.

I dressed quickly, pulling my hair into its usual braid and grabbing my bag. The morning light coming through the curtains was pale and thin. I would have time to hit the library before class.

My conversation with Lucas last night had been swirling around my head since Neft him. I wasn’t quite sure where to begin when it came to discovering more of the details surrounding my death. But the library seemed like the most logical place.

I wasn’t sure what I would find there. Probably nothing. But on the off chance that there was some old story about someone who had gone through the process of rebirth like I had, then I figured I could start there. Maybe, if I could understand my condition a little better, then the rest would fall into place.

I had just slipped out of my room and turned the corner when I nearly walked directly into Dominic.

He was freshly showered, hair still a little damp, in the middle of buttoning his shirtsleeve when he looked up and saw me. We both stopped and stared at each other.

“Morning,” I muttered, moving to brush past him. He stepped in my way before I could. His nostrils flared, and I heard the sound of him…

Was he… sniffing me?

I pulled my head back and looked at him. “Smell something?” I asked.

“Yeah.” He finished buttoning his cuff and dropped his hand to his side. “You smell like him.”

“Oh, for the love-”

“You were with him last night, weren’t you?” Dominic’s eyes flashed. “I heard someone sneak in late. Saw a shadow under my door. Did you go to him, or did he come to you?”

I didn’t answer that. Because technically I did see Lucas last night, just not in the way Dominic seemed to think. And I wasn’t about to explain the real reasons behind our late-night meeting.

“I have to go to class,” I said coldly.

Dominic pursed his lips. “Let me check your room first.”

“What?” I stared at him. “You’re not being serious.”

“Deadly,” he replied in a cool, even tone.

I watched him for a moment, genuinely convinced that he was fucking with me. But Dominic’s eyes remained cold, unbothered. He was being serious. He was going to check my room. Like I was some kind of insolent teenager who needed to be monitored.

It was almost laughable, really. To think that I had not orice, but twice fallen for him like the fool I was. And now here he was, just as domineering as ever.

But I had places to be. And I sort of wanted to see the look on his face when he realized that he was getting on my ass over nothing.

“Fine,” I said, stepping out of the way and gesturing toward my room. “Be my guest.”

He held my gaze for a second longer, then turned and walked down the hall. I followed, because I wasn’t just about to give him free, unmonitored roam in my own fucking bedroom.

I leaned in the doorway with my arms crossed as he stepped into the room. He paused in the center of the carpet, turning slowly to take it all in. My neatly made bed. The small arrangement of jewelry and perfume on top of my dresser. The open bathroom door.

“Is he in here?” he asked, pointing at the closet.

I shrugged. “Dunno. Look for yourself.”

Growling low, Dominic stormed over to the closet door and grabbed the handle. I watched with a quirked brow as he tensed, the muscles in his neck cording slightly with anger. Then, he flung the door open.
