Chapter 251
“Don’t you think,” I said carefully, “that at this point it might be simpler to just”
“Clearly, she’s being influenced by him,” Dominic’ cut me off. He crossed to his desk and began shuffling around papers. “Lucas has had his hooks in her for a long time, and she’s not going to snap out of it on her own. She needs a firm hand and someone keeping tabs on her until I can get him out of the picture permanently.”
I looked at him. I wanted, very badly, to point out that Ellie was not some lost puppy who had wandered off the property and needed a leash. She was a grown woman making her own choices, and the choices she kept making weren’t befitting of a Luna.
But I could tell that Dominic wasn’t going to back down from this.
“Do you have someone in mind?” I managed.
“Actually, yes.” He sat back down and picked up his pen. “There’s a young wornan in the pack. Abigail. She actually sent me her resume for a similar position recently.” He pulled a paper out of the stack and held it up. “She’s had experience in this kind of household role before, and she’s-”
My stomach dropped.
“No,” I said.
Dominic looked up.
“Not Abigail,” I said, keeping my voice even. “I know her, and I don’t think she’s the right fit.”
The truth was that the last time I had crossed paths with Abigail, something about the interaction had sat wrong with me ever since. I had laid my trap very carefully, and Abigail acted like she already knew. Not suspected. Knew. Like she had been watching me like a fly on the wall when I planned the whole thing.
I didn’t know who she was reporting back to or how she got her information, but I wasn’t about to let her anywhere near this household. She was clearly working for Ellie in one way or another, and putting her in that position would only put Ellie at more of an advantage. I couldn’t have that.
“Why not?” Dominic asked.
“I just don’t think she’s reliable,” I said. “I’ve had a couple of interactions with her that gave me pause. Nothing I can point to definitively, but-” I shook my head. “I would feel much better if we found someone else. Actually, let me handle it.”
He studied me for a moment. “You would appoint her yourself?”
“Ellie is my sister. I know what she needs,” I said. “I can find someone trustworthy and discreet. Someone who will do the job properly and not get personally involved. Besides, you have enough on your plate with everything going on. Let me take care of this part.”
Dominic was quiet. I could tell he didn’t really want to hand the reins over, but right now, his anger against Ellie was outweighing anything he felt for me.
Finally, he gave a short nod. “Fine. Just find someone by the end of the week.”

“UL course,” I said.
I left the study without another word and pulled the door shut behind me. The hallway was empty, allowing me to breathe.
So. Dominic wasn’t going to divorce Ellie today like I had hoped. This wasn’t ideal, but it was better than nothing. I could work with this.
I pulled out my phone and scrolled to a name I hadn’t contacted in a while. Someone who had known me long enough to not question my motives. Someone who was good at blending in, at being helpful and warm and completely above suspicion.
She picked up on the second ring.
“Hey,” I said. “I have a job for you.”
